Remember these kids are still just kids, rookie heroes. Actually not even that, they're interns so they aren't even at the hero level yet. Its like when Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura were up against Zabuza, they couldn't do much (well, Sakura didn't do a damn thing) it really showed the difference in strength between amateurs and pro's. Stain is on the pro-level, killing pro heroes so of course Iida couldn't take him down on his own, or even him and Deku, it took three student hero's to even have a slight chance of beating Stain. Man, it gets so, so much better from here!
