Widow's Vengenace chapter 8 - Wishes

Chapter 8 - Wishes

"Agent Romanoff." A voice greeted her the very second she had entered the briefing room and sat down. She nodded to the speaker, who in this case was Director Nick Fury, the director of an organisation known as Shield, an organisation she worked for. The Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division, better known by its acronym S.H.E.I.L.D, is an American extra-governmental military counter-terrorism and intelligence agency, tasked with maintaining both national and global security. In the most basic explanation she could think of: Shield were the good guys that did their best to save the world and that was right before they did overtime trying to make sure that the world stayed safe.

Other than herself there were three people in the room, one of which was Director Fury who she was sat opposite to. Standing on his right was a beautiful woman in a full body, blue coloured uniform with brown hair pushed into a bun, her name was Maria Hill. Maria Hill held the position of Deputy Director of Shield, she was basically higher in rank and authority than everyone apart from Director Fury. She enjoyed a well-deserved reputation as being tough-minded and by the book.

Standing on Fury's left was a kind looking man in a black suit with combed brown hair, he undoubtedly was the least intimidating out of everyone but he still could be quite dangerous on his own. His name was Phil Coulson, he was one of Shield's best agents and was Director Fury's right-hand man and probably one of the very few people that Director Fury could and willingly would call a friend.

Though those two were not as intimidating as Director Fury himself, he was dressed all in black with a bullet proof vest, he always kept several weapons and gadgets on him, she wouldn't be surprised if he actually kept at least three guns hidden in his bathroom. He was a bald man with black skin, a black goatee and the most noticeable thing about him was the fact that his left eye was covered by a black eye patch. Nobody really knew what had happened to his eye as far as she was aware, some people guessed that he had gotten it by doing something heroic like saving a life while others would spend time thinking up the most ridiculous things that could have happened to his eye like getting it damaged in a kitchen or getting attacked by a cat.

"Sir." She nodded in greeting. "You wanted to see me?" She asked. It was a weird experience, she was an adult, one who was in fact one of Shield's best spies and had actually killed people before, yet sometimes she could sit in a room with these three and feel like a naughty girl who had gotten sent to the principal's office.

"I did," Director Fury confirmed with a small nod of his head, the man had a near permanent scowl on his face so it was slightly more difficult to get a read on him and to tell if he was pissed off or not, thankfully he seemed fine so far. "I have a new mission assignment for you," Fury said as Coulson handed him a folder which he took without looking at Coulson, he placed it down on the table that was in-between them in an almost gentle way. He then slowly pushed it forwards until it was in front of her.

"Sir, you called me all of the way here to discuss an assignment with me?" She asked, raising an eyebrow. That was most definitely not normal behaviour for the Director, the man who was arguably the busiest person in Shield. "What makes this one so special?" She asked. Her past experiences told her that she would usually just be sent an assignment that told her what to do, she rarely ever met with the Director since most of the time all she needed to do was get an assignment, complete the assignment and then deliver a report on the assignment. The few times she had ever actually had to attend meetings with the Director since joining Shield were to discuss assignments that were far more important than her usual tasks.

"Well," Director Fury began, she couldn't help but notice the quick look that Agent Hill and Agent Coulson exchanged. "it's not exactly the mission itself that is the special part."

"Then what is?" She asked in a curious voice.

"The person that you will be working with." Director Fury responded before he turned to Agent Coulson and gave him a small nod, Agent Coulson nodded back before he turned around and left the room.

"He is going to go and get your new partner." Agent Hill said to her, answering the unasked question that was on her mind.

"Perhaps the two of you could tell me more about my partner?" She asked.

"Your partner is an enhanced individual who has recently started working for Shield." Hill told her, this surprised her even if she didn't react beyond a small and brief widening of her eyes. An 'enhanced' was a simple term used to describe people that were not normal people and usually had some form of powers, such as the famous World War Two soldier known as Captain America, a man who had had his entire body enhanced thanks to a serum known as 'The Super Soldier Serum'.

"We do not know the full scope of his powers or limits," Director Fury admitted to her. "we have tried to find out as much as we can, but it's clear to us that he's hiding more than he's willing to show."

"Do you want me to try and discover more about his powers?" She asked, it certainly sounded like it but she knew better than to assume.

"No," Director Fury shook his head. "if you do find out more than that would be great and very helpful, however that will not be your priority, at least not now. I want you to simply observe him. Later I will want a report on what he can do, what he does and even what you think he can do along with if you think he's a good fit for Shield. Intelligence, information, that's what is important right now." Director Fury told her.

Any response she might have had was cut off when she heard the sound of footsteps, she stayed silent as the door to the room opened, first Agent Coulson came back in, he was trying to keep a straight face and nearly managed to succeed, but the slight curving of his lips gave him away. She knew that Coulson could act like a bit of a fan boy at times and was very interested in enhanced individuals, he still kept his Captain America training cards with him, something which he would proudly show off. This let her know that Agent Coulson was either amused by something or he found her new partner to be interesting, most likely the second, possibly both.

"Agent Romanoff," Agent Coulson spoke. "meet your new partner, his code name is 'Revenant'." He told her as he stepped to the side, the corners of his lips rising slightly higher when he told her the code name.

Natasha's eyes widened when another person walked in, following Agent Coulson. She recognised him immediately, this was the individual that had killed all of those men and escaped before she could do anything, he looked exactly the same but with one rather obvious difference, this time she couldn't see the green orbs hanging inside his hood.

"You." She breathed.

"Natasha," Harry said as he gently shook her awake. "Natasha, wake up, please." Harry said in a soft voice.

"H...Harry," She blinked as she raised her hands and began rubbing her eyes. "what is it?" She asked in a sleepy voice as she stifled a yawn.

"Your mum told me to wake you up," Harry responded. "she said you need to get ready or you won't wake up in time to have breakfast before you go to school."

"Oh." Natasha said as she looked towards the clock in her room and saw the time. "I'll be down in five minutes, Harry." She said when she looked back at him.

"Okay," Harry nodded before an odd look came on his face. "are you okay?" He asked. "You normally wake up earlier than this, don't you?" He asked, she could easily hear the concern in his voice. "You're not sick, are you?" He asked, he reached a hand over and placed it on her forehead to check her temperature.

"I'm fine, Harry." She said in a warm voice. "I just had a weird dream."

"A bad one?" Harry asked as he pulled his hand away, she seemed fine if her temperature was any indication.

"No, those are called nightmares." She told him. "I had a weird dream where I was a spy." She added with a grin. "So was Clint."

"Hmm, was I in there?" Harry asked.

"Yeah, but you were a wizard." She smirked.

"I wish." Harry said in an amused before he turned and walked off and left the room.

"Sometimes wishes come true." Natasha whispered to herself.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Harry and Natasha were currently sat in front of the piano, each taking turns to practise, right now Harry was trying to learn Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky, Natasha already knew it and was teaching him how to do it. Natasha had told him that after he had learnt at least three songs then the two of them would try doing duets together, something which Harry correctly guessed to mean playing together.

Harry was really, really starting to enjoy playing the piano. He still preferred playing Fur Elise by Ludwig Van Beethoven, partly because that was the first one he had ever learnt. He could learn a hundred more, but that one would always be his first.

Harry was also really looking forward to learning how to do archery, Clint had told Harry that he would convince Jess and Matt to take Harry to archery with Clint. On the one hand Harry wanted to protest as he didn't really want to burden Jess and Matt or make them use up more money on him than they needed to, but on the other hand Harry really wanted to learn archery, it seemed so cool.

So far all Harry really knew was what he was supposed to do since Clint had instructed him on how to shoot using his own bow and some imaginary arrows, Harry knew he was far from an expert on using a bow and arrow but he was fairly sure that it would be a lot harder to use with real arrows. Harry had seen Clint hold the bow and Harry could not help but notice the almost effortless way that Clint held it. When Harry held the bow he felt like his whole body was telling him 'you have a bow in your hand, try not to mess this up'. When Clint held it he looked like his body had barely noticed, he might as well have picked up a pencil given how relaxed he looked. Harry couldn't help but wish that one day he could look just as relaxed as Clint, just as confident and just as brave.

"What are you thinking about?" Natasha asked him after she stopped playing.

"I beg your pardon?" Harry asked as he turned to her.

"You have a thinking face on," Natasha told him. "what are you thinking about?"

"Well..." Harry coughed, looking lightly embarrassed. "...I was just wondering if I would ever be like Clint."

"What do you mean?" Natasha asked. "If this is about archery then just remember the Clint's a natural and has been practising for ages, you could probably be quite good once Mum and Dad start taking you there."

"No, it's not." Harry shook his head, though he was rather glad Natasha thought that he could be good at archery. "It's just...well...Clint's always really...confident, you know? He looks like he's not scared of anything. I want to be like that." Harry quietly admitted. "Not scared of anything."

"Harry," Natasha said as she reached over and placed a hand on his. "just because Clint looks brave all the time doesn't mean he's not scared of anything. Do you know what would happen if you and Clint were both pushed out of a plane? You'd both scream, except Clint would probably swear more." Natasha added, earning an amused laugh from Harry. "Don't worry, I'm sure that when you're bigger you'll be just as confident."

"Really?" Harry asked, surprised by how sure she sounded.

"Yeah, maybe one day you'll even start scaring someone else."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Agent Romanoff currently found herself sitting in a Shield jet, the jet was filled with other people including the two pilots. The other Shield agents tried to act like nothing out of the ordinary was happening, she tried to do the same. She had better success than the others as she had managed to distract herself with the computer tablet that she was holding, the others weren't as successful since every now and then the agents would glance towards the distraction, the distraction that was sitting opposite Agent Romanoff.

The shield agents were all dressed in black, but none of them looked like how the person sitting opposite Agent Romanoff looked. They repeatedly looked at the shadows that were covering his face, almost as if they expected the shadows to suddenly disappear and show who was really under the hood. She couldn't help but shake her head at that, after ten minutes or so of the same thing you would think that they would learn.

The man - 'Revenant' as he was calling himself - was sitting as calmly as one could, showing nearly no signs of movement apart from his shoulders slightly moving when he breathed. The only other part of him that was moving was the part that was holding what at first glance appeared to be a stick in his right hand. He had been twirling the stick non-stop since he had sat down, and it didn't seem like he would be stopping anytime soon.

Though upon closer inspection she had realised that what he was holding was not a stick. It was clearly carved and seemed to have a handle and it was also completely black. She hardly believed it but he was holding what seemed to be a wand. She doubted it was an actual wand, it was far more likely for it to be some tech that was disguised as a wand. At least...that's what she thought at first.

One Shield agent had made the mistake of trying to talk to Revenant, Revenant didn't actually do anything to the agent, at least not anything that she could see, but she could feel it, everyone could feel it.

It was difficult to describe but it was like as if a small part of her being was warning her to stay silent, to stay out of the way, to do her best to not attract attention. She felt like an animal who was in range of a bigger animal, a predator. Once the agent had backed off the feeling died down and everyone silently breathed a sigh of relief.

Nobody said anything, but they all knew Revenant was responsible.

Comments

Thank you for the update. The flashbacks are really interesting I'd like to see more of those.

Hannibal St.Michael

Definitely another excellent chapter, thank you very much. And Fur Elise is definitely a great favorite to have, but I would have to choose Chopin’s Ballad No. 1 in G minor as my favorite, Especially accompanied by a violin, it’s one of the last songs you see in the anime your lie in April, and utterly fantastic and heartbreaking.
