Undergoing a medical procedure does not mean you must give up breastfeeding forever. With proper care and detoxification you can resume breastfeeding your child after the procedure once the medication has exited your system.
Always consult your pediatrician and follow all detox instructions before resuming breastfeeding. Some medications are NOT safe for breastfeeding. Pumping or hand expression and proper milk disposal until your doctor says the medication is safely out of your system and it is safe to resume feedings is the only way you can ensure the safety of your breastfed child after your medical procedure.
Even topical or injected lidocaine (a popular numbing agent used for dental work etc) can be toxic in large quantities so make sure you let your doctor and pediatrician know you’re breastfeeding so they can give you guidance on when to resume feeding your child your breastmilk.
