Guess what mommy‘s! Don’t be too worried about your milk supply if you get really sick and are unable to breast-feed for a few days.
It is recommended to pump while you’re sick or hand express if you can or feed as much as possible if it is possible, yet in my experience The milk supply will still be there and it will not take too long to relactate and get back to where you were.
It just takes a lot of hydration so stay hydrated when you’re sick!
If your baby is exclusively on breastmilk I definitely recommend pumping or breast-feeding your baby while wearing a mask for as many times as you can while you’re sick to prevent your baby from getting ill.
If your child is still breast-feeding and already on solids so don’t worry too much about your breastmilk supply as long as you resume breast-feeding as soon as possible after being ill it’s OK to miss a day or two!
I was so severely ill that I couldn’t breast-feed for over three days possibly four days I think and I still had milk coming out.
I tried to quickly hand expressed what I could into a sink or the toilet if I was capable of doing so but I was so weak and so sick that I could barely do anything even moving me made me nauseous.
It was extremely difficult to navigate through this hard time this week! the withdrawal that I felt from not breast-feeding my baby, the possibility of mastitis comes along if you don’t empty the breast, but I was unable to fully empty my breast or feed my baby for a few days. I discovered that my milk supply was still intact!
she went right back to breast-feeding and here we are happily breast-feeding mommy and baby together again so happy to finally be able to have the energy to feed my child again after a long pause. I was completely incapable of taking care of anyone let alone myself for those few days of extreme nausea and severe headache sore throat cough etc. The sore throat and cough and mucus have gotten worse but since the nausea subsided I am happily able to breast-feed my child again.
Just remember mama you’re doing your best! You will get through this and it will be OK! That was my mantra that got me through this illness that I am still fighting.
I wish everyone a safe and well winter! Stay warm and healthy out there don’t forget to mask up for safety COVID-19 is still very prevalent even though it has been pushed back as safe it is NOT safe out there.
Keep your family healthier by masking up wearing gloves sanitizing shopping carts and vegetables and just use your overall common sense on germ protection because this was a nasty flu a horrible Covid and or or bout of strep throat for me!
I’m happy to say my three-year-old because of breast-feeding did not pick up this virus! That’s a win-win for breast-feeding moms and families everywhere! Remember we are lucky to have this liquid gold! It truly is exactly that!
Xoxo 😘
