Most of the areola should be in the babies mouth so that the nipple is touching the roof of the mouth. When the latch is too shallow milk doesn’t flow properly and can cause nipple pain. The lips should be turned out and a shallow latch can be easily fixed by placing one clean finger gently under lip to pull it upward to turn it out while the baby is nursing. This technique instantly fixes any pain coming from a nipple from a shallow latch. A shallow latch can lead to a decreased milk supply as well so having and maintaining a proper latch throughout your breast-feeding journey is an extremely important thing.
