The nipple area especially while breast-feeding is extremely sensitive and can become very dry and chapped. This can lead to peeling and uncomfortable irritated nipples dryness can even cause itching but please don’t confuse thrush itching with dryness itching. When in doubt always consult your doctor. When using a moisturizer to help prevent dryness from breast-feeding around the tender nipple area it is best to do at night after last feeding of the day and to use one finger only to gently pat the moisturizer into the nipple rather than rubbing it in and causing more irritation. Always use a gentle moisturizer I like the one that is made for newborn skin as my skin is extremely sensitive and this works best for me. I first clean the area with witch hazel in order to clean any bacteria from breast-feeding off of the nipple area and it also helps soothe irritated skin then I gently dab my finger with lotion and dab around the nipple area in order to moisturize to prevent any dryness and cracking.

this is an important step into maintaining nipple health while breast-feeding your baby always wash with a gentle scent free soap or free and clear dish soap and rinse well with water before feeding your baby after applying moisturizer. Talk to your doctor about what moisturizer is best for you to use on your type of skin. Always patch test an area of your skin before using any moisturizer as some people have bad allergies to ingredients and in my opinion it is always best to buy non-toxic hypoallergenic or sent free paraben free etc to prevent yourself or baby from having Too much exposure to harsh chemicals.
