As someone whose brain is occupied by about 50% Simpsons trivia, 49% Beatles trivia, and 1% miscellaneous, this episode has always been a favorite of mine. I always felt a missed opportunity of a joke was the acknowledgment of the band’s “Butcher Cover” version of their “Yesterday and Today” album. Perhaps knowledge of it was rare in pre-internet times, but the gag writes itself when at the swap meet amongst the Inverted Jenny stamps and Action Comics #1, was an infamous Beatles record that goes for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

2024-08-25 23:12:38 +0000 UTCThis episode has always been special to me. First I've always been a big Beatles fan so I loved all the references and the Harrison cameo. And Katie's perspective and knowledge was an amazing addition. Funnily enough the whole bigger than Jesus Christ controversy was referenced on the Chipmunks too when Alvin got into hot water over claiming they were bigger than Mickey Mouse. The second and more important reason is that this was the first episode that my wife watched together as an official couple. All through season 4 we were just friends who would get together every Thrusday night in her dorm room to watch. So our love blossomed from our mutual love of the Simpsons. 31 years later, we still speak to each other mostly in Simpsons quotes, had Homer and Marge cake topper at our wedding, I'll refer to our son as "The Boy" and we have joked for years that if the show is ever concelled we may have to get divorced. I think it would be an interesting study to learn how many couples came together thanks to the Simpsons.

They just don't do it for me, but for some reason, Beatles fans CAN'T accept that people don't dig them as much as they do. And moreso than any other band, they seem to be above criticism and they only band that I can think of that elicits the "you're a contrarian if you think they suck" sentiments. I have often wondered why this is, but I don't have a clear reason other than that they're extremely popular across many age groups, so there are generations of Beatles punishers who will get mad at you that you haven't listened to Sgt. Pepper's for the 10th time to REALLY make sure that it isn't your favorite album yet. And yes, my not-caring about them is slightly hypocritical because my favorite band is the extremely Beatles-esque Guided by Voices.

2024-08-22 20:51:21 +0000 UTCI worked on Alvin 4: The Road Chip 😒 It was one of the first times super high def resolutions were being shot in-camera (as opposed to post converted) which resulted in all the scans/plates for this show being 6K-FullAp, which is frankly enormous and completely unnecessary, standard being 2K. Just to put into perspective, it's a bigger format than both James Cameron AND Peter Jackson had delved into at that point in time. Looking back I still have no idea why this decision was made on such a throw away sequel feature and have to assume it was part of some kind of tax write off or similar backroom deal. This whopping big format broke all the software we regularly use in our work, making even the most basic functions super unstable. At the time I had this daydream about two seven year old's emerging from the cinema, locked in an excited conversation about how excellent the 6K format looked and how it was totally a great decision on behalf of the film makers..

2024-08-21 16:18:14 +0000 UTCThe 'Now people will stop intentionally ramming the car!' line has been one of my favourite Simpsons lines since I first heard it, I love the absurdity of the concept and just how fast they run through the joke, it's almost a throw-away line but it's so damn funny. The scene where Clancy shoots at the TV and Sarah tells him to use the remote, I swear there's a longer version where Sarah tells him to use the remote, Clancy says that he can't find it, then she says to check the holster and thats when he looks over and says 'oh yea'. In my memory it was what I originally saw on TV down here. Initially I had assumed that it was a syndication change as down here in Aus we had different cuts than you did. The episodes were still shortened, but less was cut out because our TV rules mandated fewer ads than yours. Later they changed it so our rules aligned with yours to that US syndication cuts could play here without needing any interstitial content between shows.

Also, I guess Dexy's is one of those bands such as Chumbawumba who are "one-hit wonders" in America but had (slightly) more prolific careers this side of the Atlantic.

2024-08-19 20:29:22 +0000 UTCI’ve seen The Good Son AND read the novelization in the 90s as a kid because I wasn’t allowed to watch R rated movies. Roger Eberts review is a little heavy handed — it’s basically just a 70s exploitation thriller done in the 90s thriller style. It does have an insane ending where Elijah Wood throws Macaulay Culkin from a cliff and we’re treated to a comically long shot of the Married With Children style Culkin dummy falling into the sea. He does make a good point about it being insane to do this movie a year after Home Alone 2.

2024-08-15 03:03:56 +0000 UTCAside from that we had a black kitty named Snowball (who predated our watching the Simpsons, so true coincidence), this was the episode that made me feel like my family was, for lack of. better word “represented” on screen as. little kid. At the time my mom still had a “Baby on Board” sign on her car, and I was so annoyed by it because my sister and i were in Kindergarten and 2nd grade and not babies. When I asked why, she said “so people won’t hit our car.” And then, this episode aired and I said “Mom! Like you!” and she tried to clarify that she didn’t think people would INTENTIONALLY do that, but it was close enough for me. (Her car stopped working a year or so later and the sign retired with it.)

2024-08-14 19:27:08 +0000 UTCI used to see people dump on "Deep Space Homer" for being a "jump the shark" moment for The Simpsons and I always thought it was a bad take. I don't think there is such a moment for The Simpsons because it's pretty well established that it can go anywhere, but if there was one such moment then I'd consider it this episode. Everything about this episode is implausible and the episode pointing that out in the end doesn't undo that. It's one of those moments that's a little too far for me and I have a hard time separating what I know about Homer to be true from what I'm seeing. For that reason, it's one of my least rewatched episodes from this season and I tend to skip it when doing my rewatches. It also hurts that I'm not a Beatles fan so the many, many, references which you folks did a fine job of highlighting just don't land for me. That doesn't mean there still isn't some all-timers in this episode because that's the era of The Simpsons we're currently looking at where even the lesser episodes still have a joke being repeated today. And every time I saw a trailer, poster, or ad of some time for Wakanda Forever I instinctively added a "Barney never" in my head or out loud.

2024-08-14 13:50:41 +0000 UTCThe ACTUAL original purpose of the Baby on Board stickers is to let paramedics/first responders know that there may be a young child in the vehicle so they should hurry to rescue them FIRST before the adults. Maybe because of the Simpsons, I had assumed it was for exactly what y'all mentioned with it being an indicator to maybe not aggressively ram a vehicle, but at some point my dad explained it to me and I did a double check online and it seems to be correct.
