What A Cartoon! - Duckman "The Once and Future Duck"

What if Everything Everywhere All at Once starred a foul-mouthed, perverted, yellow duck? We've all kept ourselves up at night mulling over that question, ignorant of the fact that Duckman answered it in 1996! On this episode of What A Cartoon, join us as we dip back into Duckman and explore "The Once and Future Duck," a season three episode that shows how high-concept this short-lived USA series could truly get. Plus, bonus facts about Rhonda Shear!

After the first Duckman episode on the Talking Simpsons feed, I bought the complete series DVDs and watched through the full show a few months later (early 2018 I think?) and fell in love with it completely. It obviously has a lot of dated, very 90s opinions and moments, but Jason Alexander is so fucking good in the title role, the animation is such a joy to watch, and it's refreshing to have like 60 episodes of a cartoon aimed at adults that isn't just in the Rick and Morty knock-off style and full of awful, bottom of the barrel jokes like a lot of what we're stuck with these days. All this is to say I am always happen when you guys get to talk some Duckman, and this is a great episode to revisit (even without the appearance of Tim Curry).

I feel like the success of Seinfeld robbed us of more Jason Alexander as a voice actor. I was watching Dinosaurs the other night and was reminded that he did some voice work on that show and he was great at it! There must be another universe out there where NBC gave up on Seinfeld and Alexander became synonymous with animation in the same manner as Billy West, Tress MacNeille, and Jim Cummings.

So sure, no one with a life remembers Hope & Gloria, but there is a certain vintage of gay culture nerd who latched on to it because pubescent gays often relate to fiction about single women in their 30s. I related strongly to this show about two women, one mouthy and one mousy. The only reason anyone else remembers it is that it technically exists in the Friends universe because in one episode they meet Phoebe. This is all I have to share about Hope & Gloria, which I likely will never mention again. Thank you.

Oh I played baritone in middle school! I was, however, a very small girl, and caring that thing home a mile from the bus stop was too much so I switched to trumpet. 20 years later I picked baritone back up! And even bought a big red plastic tuba. It was cheap and had never been played, because they'd only bought it for a photo shoot for Target. I have since sold it to an old retired finance guy in Georgia who ended up becoming kind of a pen pal and mentor to me on my accounting school journey.

Great episode! It's interesting you bring up the antecedents from this concept, because like every high concept plot of a cartoon, this Duckman is partially inspired by a Twilight Zone. It's the other William Shatner one, Nick of Time. In that, it's a magic machine which spits fortunes, causing choice paralysis. As you might guess, it ends poorly.

I hope Henry brings up when Duckman was brought up on Monday Night Raw, damn i really want that Duckman show. Also Cornfed called into Raw to talk to Jerry Lawler and Vince Mcmahon

Frank Zappa didn't compose the theme music for Duckman, but they *did* use his songs throughout the first season. You are correct about Csupo being a big Zappa fan/friend - he even designed the (ugly) cover for Frank's posthumous "Lost Episodes" album.

thanks for the...tip (listening to his tipping episode right now)

Jason Alexander hosts his own podcast…for now called Really No Really. Been posting on his TikTok asking him about Duckman

I never even knew the show existed until you guys mentioned it way back in the early days of talking Simpsons My parents would’ve never allow me to watch it, which is probably how I missed it And by the time the Internet came around, I was busy into other things But man, this show is literally made for me I have all the DVDs And I can’t wait to order my official Duckman shirt But also, I would like to point out legalized gambling It’s actually two states Utah is correct Bob is right about that The church of latter-day Saints, absolutely forbids it But the other state is Hawaii which, according to Wikipedia had gambling band, officially even before statehood So it’s actually the inverse of what Homer said now it’s LEGAL in 48 states lol

USA was one of my fave networks in the 2000s...with Monk, Psych, House reruns, suits, burn notice, etc....and now all they got is chucky...wow. that's actually kinda sad. And is it really considered a USA original? It's on Syfy as well...I heard about it via syfy's YT/Twitter. A little surprised it's on USA

Always love a Duckman episode! I looked up the Homer clip and I agree with Henry, seeing that Homer style do the finger wiggle was great!
