Blabbin 'Bout Batman: The Animated Series - It's Never Too Late

Welcome to the second season of Blabbin 'Bout Batman: The Animated Series! (And thank you for being a patron.) We're kicking off eight full weeks of this podcast series with an unlikely pick—and one not concerning a colorful supervillain with strange powers. This early episode shows just what the BTAS team could get away with thanks to its hard-boiled story about two middle-aged gangsters that gradually gets around to featuring the Caped Crusader. In any case, it's a seldom-talked-about episode, and we can't wait to discuss why it's so special. So sit back and listen, and be sure to watch out for oncoming trains!

Rest in Power to the Dark Knight Kevin Conroy

Thanks Bob, had a dig around and Podcasts deleted it off my feed for some reason. Looking forward to it!

Extremely bittersweet timing on this - I was 1/3 of the way through the episode when I saw the news about Kevin. He will be extremely missed and I'm bummed out I never got to meet him and express how big a part of my childhood (and continued everyday life, really) he was. RIP. -- As for this episode, it's DEFINITELY not even in the bottom half of BTAS episodes, but it's definitely one I was always kind of like "oh, this one again" when it would come on as a kid or when I was doing my nearly annual rewatch of the show. It wasn't until I watched it again with the Blu-Ray set that I really appreciated how simple and lowfi this episode is, and how no other American cartoon of the day was doing this kind of thing. I also appreciate the use of Rupert Thorne over it straight up being Falcone or Maroni (even with the changes they made), thanks in part to how many times we've seen Falcone in the past 20+ years.

It’s still available and the series will continue as planned.

Carmine Falcone is supposed pronounced, car-mine Fowl-cone. The e is usually silent, the way people often pronounce it would be spelled Falconi for the hard e at the end. It's a who Ra's Al-Ghoul thing really.

That Guy, Joe

Has this been pulled? I'm not seeing it in my iPhone podcasts feed anymore.

I’m doing a count of how many episodes have gas attacks since my favorite TAS thing is all the villains have their own branded gas

What incredibly unfortunate timing (or fortunate considering we'll be celebrating Conroy's legacy till the end of the year on the podcast network). This show was before my time, but when I did eventually discover it, I was enraptured by its maturity in both style and substance. Kevin Conroy's Batman is one of the all time great Batman performances and perhaps even cartoon voices of all time. He will be missed... In terms of the actual episode's content, I, like Bob, am always astounded when kid's media just gets to be about adults going through shit. I remember taking a class about developing an animated series and my main characters in the pitch were in their 20's. My teacher encouraged me to age the cast down to about middle or high school age, and while I did... part of me wishes I stood my ground more and let them stay older. I feel like there's room for strong adult characters/issues in kid's media and I'm glad superhero shows like those DCAU can be that gateway into telling more mature stories for a general audience. Great episode and great podcast, guys! Can't wait for more.

I was lucky enough to work with Kevin, once. I still can't get over how nice he was. ❤ RIP

RIP to the GOAT Batman. Hearing today's news and the title of the episode...:(

On a light note, the antipasto talk reminded me of a Jonny Bravo joke where Jonny gets attacked by a plate of spaghetti I think and he quips: This must be some of that anti pasta. I always loved that joke. On a serious note, it's heartbreaking to know of Conroy's passing. His voice is synonymous with the Batman character for me and to know he was such a good human being on top of playing a character I loved as a kid cemented him as the definitive Batman.

best/worst timing. rip
