Talking Simpsons - Flaming Moe's With Tim Kalpakis

Hi, guys. Love the podcast. ^_^ I'm listening to The Rescuers Down Under episode and Henry mentioned the movie Uncle Buck, but that he didn't remember much about it (except for the giant pancakes). There's a scene in the movie where Buck uses an electric screwdriver to open a door and I think that's what's being referenced when Lisa and her friends use one while chasing Bart into his room. https://youtu.be/nggWTNLFifA Well, that's what it reminds me of, anyway. Thanks again for all the great work you do. ^_^

I submit that this is the best episode of The Simpsons. One could write an entire dissertation on it.

One of my former gigs was as a reference and local history public librarian which entailed a lot of genealogy research for patrons. With full access to Ancestry.com, of course I'm going to eventually look up in US Census data to see if any of Bart's prank names were actually real people. The sole hits I found were for one Anita Bath in the 1910 Census if I remember correctly and for Hugh Jass, only in a 1955 high school year book. I'm thinking it must've been a joke because he was only listed in the group picture of the boys' volleyball team and not anywhere else in the yearbook. I sure hope the yearbook editor got fired for that blunder ;-)

My uncle (who i am also named for weirdly) was the sound guy for the Coconut Teaszer in the 80's and 90's where he became semi-close with Slash from Guns N' Roses and found a good friend in Sabbath guitarist Zakk Wilde (his kid is named Zakk), he was there as the metal/glam trend was fading and Punk was starting to take over. so first it was a BBQ restaurant that expanded into live music, and then renamed after the most famous drink at the bar, the Coconut Teaszer. (my guess is the Simpsons writers had been to there to drink/eat perhaps weren't there to see music at the venue) He was (I Believe) gone at the time Heidi Fleiss started infamously using the club, but he told us a story about an argument he got in with a very intoxicated Courtney Love over sound levels during an early Hole performance, so I'd have to ask him for better dates as to when he actually left. It died out due to not pivoting like a lot of the other clubs did in the 2000s, and became a series of restaurants as well, as well as predictably a shooting location for entourage. He did get to see a very early weezer performance as well which I was always jealous of (he didn't care he's an old school metalhead), but I always thought he was my coolest uncle due to this and the uncle magic of giving me Slashes guitar pic and showing me the home recording of Casey Kasem saying "Fuck" when I was like six.

@Henry - You mentioned you wanted to grab a slice of pizza from the place in Spiderman 2. Well, I was there on that day of shooting! I was able to capture the day in pictures and uploaded them to imgur: https://imgur.com/a/1Vtkjv8 It was Joe's Pizza on Bleeker and Carmine. Cool to see Ben from Evil in that scene as well!

The episode guide book “The Simpsons: A Complete Guide to Our Favorite Family” from 1997 lists Catherine O’Hara as the voice of Collette. I’m not sure when they rolled that credit back - maybe a contractual thing that she had to be credited at first even though they had cut the voice? I did always think it was an oddly sedate part for her when I was younger and knew her primarily as the Home Alone mom, which is certainly explained by it not actually being her!

For those who might not know the history, lean (purple drank) is a drink originated in Houston, which started off as cough syrup and liquor. Throughout the years, it basically became codeine, sprite, and jolly ranchers, and in the 90’s it became really big in the hip hop scene, especially due Houston rapper DJ Screw. The effects make you slowed down, and contributed to the creation chopped and screwed style of music that DJ Screw popularized. This episode is always funny to me because basically, homer was essentially making lean and that was a HUGE thing, but down here in Houston, the hood already had that recipe 😭😂

Homer was making that lean! DJ Screw who????

I live in Giant Eagle territory and they just started carrying Cock N Bull's ginger beer again so I am in heaven.

Ah, Flaming Moes. I brought everything I needed to make Flaming Moes to a Labor Day party in the mid 90s. My recipe was vodka, Squirt, grape soda, Everclear to light, and of course, delicious purpley Dimetapp cough syrup. Unfortunately, they did not light. Unfortunately, nobody liked them but me. Fortunately, I was happy to drink them all day. Unfortunately the girl I had invited to the party didn't arrive until she got out of work and I had already passed out in a bed upstairs a grape-smelling mess. She never accepted any subsequent party or date invitations. Her loss. Saved me 500,000 bananas.

I always found it odd that no one has ever commented that during the wax drdripping game at the sleepover both items look more like paint brushes than a mop and dustpan, a detail and broad brush to be specific. I expected to hear the commentary mention that they were missing the obvious implications that Lisa's friends future husband was going to be an artist, or maybe a successful minature painting youtube channel? But the fact this was never mentioned made me think I was seeing something that wasn't there.

For what it's worth, your politics are one of the many reasons I stay and even upped my monthly rate
