Talking Simpsons - The War of the Simpsons With Kole Ross

This week we're joined by first-time guest Kole Ross, cohost of the many great Duckfeed.tv podcasts, to discuss the season 2 ep where Homer goes too far. After a drunken night embarrasses Marge, the couple heads to a marriage retreat that's interrupted by a giant catfish. All that, plus the first "haw haw," the first appearance of Jailbird/Snake, the source of the Lisa drinking coffee meme, and tons more in this week's podcast!

Love therealjims, my intro to caring more about the simpsons as an adult

So has Nina started sneaking the name Bob into all of her illustrations? Also, as a big fan of Watch out for Fireballs, I'm really happy you've had both Gary and Kole on the network now :D

Not only is Ned a mixologist but he also has imported beer on tap in his rumpus room! I guess it eventually caught up to him when he became more animal than man and called out Ann Landers for being a boring old biddy.

Oh ok thanks:)

That's right, our new 2022 schedule is: new WAC on the first Monday of the month, new Talking Futurama on the second Monday of the month, new TalKing of the Hill on the last Friday of the month, and new What a Cartoon Movie on the last Monday of the month. - Bob

Hey is there no show this week

Yeah my thought was definitely a stretch, but the combination of “Homer, fishing, bald guy on tv” got me thinking. Appreciate the link, seems he had quite the career!

Homer Groening was a filmmaker; he definitely wasn't a bald guy on a cable TV fishing show—and all in all the pics I found of him, even late in life, he wasn't bald. Fun fact: The logo at the end of every Futurama for The Curiosity Company comes from his short film "A Study in Wet." Here's a good article about his work: https://www.oregonlive.com/movies/2015/01/portland_filmmaker_and_simpson.html

Couple random thoughts having listened to the whole cast: William Tecumseh Sherman was an...interesting figure to put it mildly. His middle name is probably where his nickname of "Cump" came from. Like Henry mentioned he's not very popular in Georgia and most of the South and he kind of has a mixed reputation in the North too, mostly resulting from his actions in the Indian Wars. Atun-Shie Films on YouTube does a video on the General for his "Checkmate Lincolnite" series if you want to learn more about General Sherman's Civil War and post-War life. Don't worry, the channel is firmly anti-Confederacy, the title is sarcastic. In terms of sayings popularized by the Simpsons, I'd also put "meh" up there in addition to "D'oh!" and "Ha Ha!". Meh gained a lot of popularity after it was used in Sideshow Bob Roberts, which I think was also mentioned on that respective podcast episode. And finally, the "bald guy on the fishing show" might be an oblique reference to Homer Groening? Somebody on the cast (sorry I forget who) mentioned they couldn't find who the bald guy was was during a search, but earlier on the show it was said that Homer Groening worked on fishing shows in Oregon. So that might be the connection? Not sure if Homer Groening is bald like his namesake given Matt has a full head of hair, but it's a possibility.

First time I laughed at a guest's intro line

Oh nice, I didn't realise until after I listened but Kole was the cohost of my favourite Dark Souls podcast. Great guest!

"The ones at the bottom" is my least favorite Simpsons scene ever, it's borderline unwatchable

Great episode! Glad to hear some love for TheRealJims channel! His stuff is great, especially his alternate Who Shot Mr Burns videos. ^_^

Something about Homer's "Why not, I paid for it" line sounds very Garfield-like to me when just hearing the audio. Maybe because Homer doesn't usually use quiet sarcasm, his sarcasm is usually screamed.

I can’t recognize all the songs - but The Look of Love, That’s the Way and It’s Not Unusual are definitely all covers, there’s something off about each song used in this episode, and the Jones’ cover artist is close but he doesn’t quite hit the notes like Tom does in the original. I don’t want to 100% confirm but I’m confident as both a music nerd and longtime public radio DJ that these are covers.
