What A Cartoon! - The Brak Show "President Dad"

Brak emerged from the depths of a crummy action cartoon of the 60s, became one of the Cartoon Network's biggest stars 30 years later, and had less than a decade under his belt before fading back into obscurity. And the tail-end of Brak's brush with fame brought The Brak Show, a send-up of lousy sitcoms meant to be the shining star of Cartoon Network's new late-night lineup. This week, join us as we look at this Adult Swim classic, as well as the phenomenon behind the whimsical cat-boy known as Brak. It'll be more fun than a bag of wigs!

So glad you talked about this show! Brak is my favorite cartoon character and I've played those Space Ghost CDs to death. They're all still in my car to this day along with Brak Presents The Brak Show Staring Brak CD.

I know for me I didn't get into The Brak Show, but it had little to do with the show and more to do it with it being the lead-off show for Adult Swim. I just wasn't ready to turn off my PlayStation when it came on so I wasn't tuning in. I didn't catch it much until it was bumped to later timeslots, even though I was a day one viewer of Cartoon Planet and very much enjoyed Brak. I definitely preferred the more manic nature of Aqua Teen, but Brak had a place on my TV and I'm sad he's gone.

It took some time for me to really warm up to this show—I watched the the first two seasons and thought they were fine, but I didn't really start to find it hilarious until the third season, which I think is when it started getting both weirder and a little meaner. “Braklet, Prince of Spaceland” and “Shadows of Heat” were the highlights for me. On one of the Space Ghost: Coast to the Coast DVD commentaries, someone—I can't remember if it was Andy Merrill or someone else—told a story about how his mother sent the entire crew a stern letter saying that they shouldn't be wasting their time on The Brak Show because it has swear words in it. This is even funnier looking back because, like you said in this episode, The Brak Show is probably the least profane of all the Adult Swim originals.

I love Brak. Watched Space Ghost Coast-to-Coast and Cartoon Planet back in the '90s and Brak was the best guy there. I also saw the Brak Show pilot, and naturally own DVDs of this show..

The world needs more Brak.

I had checked out of this by the time The Brak Show aired, despite loving Coast to Coast in the late 90's. In 2001, I was 16 and hungry for 'edgier' humor and (more importantly) anime. I think you guys are right in that it holds up just a little better than some of its contemporaries. I tend to think that even though absurdist humor isn't always that sophisticated, it tends to be a little more evergreen.

Never mind it’s on HBO Max lmao

Is there a way to watch this online?

I've been looking forward to this episode since you guys announced it. Brak was definitely in the atmosphere for my friends in high school. One year we referred to a drill meet as the "Carnival of Feet" and sang that song the entire weekend. This show is very underrated.
