Balenciaga is a Spanish name but the company is now based in France and owned by Kering, a conglomerate run by a multi-billionaire family. Balenciaga is actually an interesting example of a contemporary fashion house - very popular with "the kids" and Kanye West - but the good news is they have loads of cash and the animators hopefully got a huge payday

That would be neato. I know that Lifehacker did a slide show of 13 books that are similar to Squid Game, which includes the original battle royale book "Lord of the Flies" as well as Kaiji, Alice in Borderland, and Liar Game. https://lifehacker.com/13-books-that-are-as-unsettling-as-squid-game-1847885327

I was listening to this at work in my silent open plan office. I started laughing uncontrollably when Henry joked about treating Florida parks like prison and jumping the biggest guy there. No regrets.

I'd forgotten about that awful Quagmire-assaults-Marge joke on Family Guy. On the original Fox broadcast the joke was cut entirely and Peter and Lois sit on the couch awkwardly for 30 seconds before cutting to commercial. On the DVD commentary Seth was NOT happy that joke didn't air. He insists that the Simpsons writers were being over sensitive and the joke was funny. I'd love to see him get asked about that joke as often as Groening is asked about Apu. (Yes, I used to buy Family Guy on DVD and listen to the commentary. Don't judge.)

I do love Alice in Borderland and Battle Royale. I'd like to see a full multimedia family tree charting the evolution of the death game subgenre from 2000 cult status to 2021 mainstream success.

There's a bunch on my watchlist that HBO Max hosts. So I guess it's one more subscription onto the pile for me.

It makes sense that you all aren't exposed to Cocomelon since you don't have kids. As Elijah Wood famously said, "That's like a baby's toy!" Cocomelon is just a series of music videos featuring a baby and his family set to nursery rhymes and other public domain songs. Sometimes they create their own lyrics, but it's usually well known music. My hypothesis as to why it's always in the top shows for Netflix is parents just play it on loop to keep their kids' attention while they work or do something else. That's what I do for my 8 month old son on days where I'm working from home and have to watch him at the same time. Since there's very little talking and all music Cocomelon tends to hold the child's attention longer than a show with lots of talking that they don't understand.

Love the death game talk guys. Bob is a person after my own heart, and he hits it right on the nose with the Asian ones being better than the US ones. I think what also makes the asian ones better is they almost almost always have it be about the main characters outsmarting the antagonists in order to win. Eventually I'll get to Squid Game since all the hype has died down. If Henry just wants a quick fix to get into them then Animal World is a fairly good adaptation of Kaiji with Michael Douglas (?!) as the main villain.

It's on HBO Max in the US. Just watch it. Well worth whatever free trial or one month of the subscription.

Henry: If you've seen Pirates of the Caribbean 1-4, then you gotta watch 5, which I would rank as the 2nd best one.

IT'S SO GOOD.

This is the second time today House came up for me, a movie I'd never heard of before

I'm more of the sci-fi fan than he is. He's more into, I dunno, puppets

nina matsumoto

He hasn't seen it yet?! Gahhhh! Yes show him!

mavrick

Hmmm you're right. I should show him Moon next time he visits.

Treehouse of Horror XXXII aired October 10th to benefit from an NFL double-header, Bob's Burgers aired their annual Halloween ep that night too. I thought it was weird they aired episodes between then and Halloween too. Oh yeah, Balenciaga isn't necessarily a French person thing, more a rich person thing. This ad literally had a demographic of basically just the Balenciaga staff cuz I don't think anyone who buys their merch would really be swayed by The Simpsons advertising it. I only ever heard about them from my wife watching Safiya Nygaard videos.

I should have waited to comment. Bob saw Sunshine finally?!?! man oh man, what a great fucking movie. it's a great pair for a double movie weekend with MOON. the music really sells the film.

mavrick

I was a bit hesitant about batman but Henry really knocks these out of the park each time and the movie post eased my fears.

I became a Nielson household a couple months ago! I'm a "regional" household so I'm worth like 30k viewers, "national" households are worth 200k iirc, but they also have to do a lot more work than i do. I can just leave something on all day and it would count theoretically. Can confirm they track streaming. The way it works is that all (studio? Professional?) media is exported with an inaudible frequency that works as an ID. So dvds, pirated media, YouTube videos would all count as long as that frequency is still there. I actually have been watching a lot of Simpsons recently though so it's fun to know that I'm in the numbers. Totally unrelated but does anybody have any recommendations for shows that you think I should try?

Slight correction on the wrestling theme mini-discussion. Real American was originally given to the team of Mike Rotundo and Barry Windham and I think that it was first mentioned as theirs on the goofier than a Goofy convention 'The Wrestling Album' that was released in 1985. In an equally weird issue of using licensed music, Windham and Rotundo were using Born in the USA. Hogan was given Real American as his entrance music after Windham cracked from the constant travel and left the WWF. The weird thing about it is in between the last time that Hogan used Eye of the Tiger and the first time I can recall him using Real American he used the theme song from Hulk Hogan's Rock and Wrestling.
