What A Cartoon! - The October 2021 Schedule

We're heading straight into the spooky season, and there's nothing scarier than a lack of podcast content to get you through all 31 harrowing days of October! Thankfully, this nightmare won't come true on the What A Cartoon podcast, since our schedule is just as full and varied as it is every month. We'll kick off October by checking out a Nickelodeon-based, tween-friendly superhero, move on to discuss Disney's other bug-eyed, yellow family, and bring this month's schedule to an end with our in-depth look at the Batman Beyond movie that was originally too hot for DVD. And don't forget, $5 and up patrons will get to hear the Talking Futurama podcast about "Where the Buggalo Roam" on the second Monday of this month!

Oh, and here's some exciting news: On October 29th, we'll be launching our Fall 2021 miniseries, Blabbin 'Bout Batman: The Animated Series! In case the title didn't give it away, on this new weekly podcast series, we'll be talking about Batman: The Animated Series—specifically, our ten favorite episodes. And you can only hear it by signing up for the Talking Simpsons Patreon at the $5 level or higher. Signing up also gets you instant access to every podcast miniseries we've released so far, which at this point is over 100 episodes!

Here's what's on the schedule for October:

Danny Phantom - "Mystery Meat" [Patreon: 10/4/21 - Free Feed: 10/11/21]

We're jumping into the Butch Hartman-iverse for the very first time thanks to premium patron and special guest Professor Gascan! While Disney's Kim Possible kicked off the boom of stylish superhero action-comedies in the early '00s, Nickelodeon carried the torch further into the decade with a series created by a guy known mostly for madcap goofery. Join us as we look at Danny Phantom's mythic origins via his 2004 debut episode, "Mystery Meat."

Danny Phantom can currently be streamed via Paramount+.

Big City Greens - "Barry Cuda" [Patreon: 10/18/21 - Free Feed: 10/25/21]

Thanks to premium patron Duckmeat, we're digging into a recent Disney Channel hit that's already racked up an impressive 60 episodes in its three years of existence (and there's more where that came from). While Big City Greens' fish-out-of water story of hicks in the big city may not seem all that original, the characters, execution, and heart make it stand out from shows featuring similar premises. And it all really comes together in "Barry Cuda," an episode about a singing novelty fish that brings out the absolute worst in the Green Family. Come for the discussion, and leave with Barry Cuda's song stuck in your brain!

Big City Greens can currently be streamed via Disney+.

An Extended Free Preview of What A Cartoon Movie for Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker [Patreon: 10/25/21 - Free Feed: 11/1/21]

Batman Beyond's Return of the Joker movie was slated to be one the darkest tales spun out of the animated Batman universe, but thanks to some unfortunate events, it came to life in a highly compromised version for its original release in 2000. Cooler heads eventually prevailed, and the uncut version stands as one of the best examples of animated Batman—and shows just why the Batman Beyond team waited so long to play the Joker card. But most importantly, our podcast about this modern classic will be the perfect primer for our upcoming Batman miniseries!

And remember: $5 patrons and folks on the free feed will hear an extended preview of the podcast, but if you want the whole thing (and access to all other episodes of What A Cartoon Movie) you'll have to bump your subscription up to the $10 level.

As usual, we've got an extremely varied collection of cartoons this month, along with your regular episode of Talking Futurama and the debut of Blabbin 'Bout Batman: The Animated Series on October 29th! So hang in there, and look forward to another month of great podcasts!

I wish you guys had done a Scooby Doo or other more spooky/Halloween show this month instead of cramming in the Patreon picks. nothing listed really scratches that itch for me

Please don’t have any more guests that constantly shit on the show. I don’t care if you buy into the populist idea that the show died under Skully or not: I don’t come to this kind of media for negativity and I never will. I like that Gary and Bob don’t beat on season 12 and I hope that is the continual atmosphere of the show.

Danny Phantom should be an interesting episode. It has quite the cult following for people my age, despite Butch's shenanigans as of late. I remember enjoying it quite a bit, but never really giving it much thought once it came off the air. I'm always interested in hearing what y'all have to say on stuff that I grew up with! Also, BCG is rad, and I'm glad you guys have finally completed the recent Disney Channel cartoon trifecta

I heard about that tuff puppy, dp, fop etc one...but always wanted a full on event during both shows' heyday. It would be so easy to get them to cross...easier than Jimmy and Timmy haha

There is "The Fairly Odd Phantom". An official online short where The Fairly OddParents crossed over with Danny Phantom. Along with T.U.F.F. Puppy and Bunsen is a Beast.

Oof, Danny Phantom is gonna be a very interesting listen from you guys. For one finally go deep in Butch Hartman, that'll be fun. Also, the whole depiction of vegetarians in that episode. I was only about 13 when that episode aired, was not a vegetarian nor knew any, but personally even I felt "this feels old and dated" when it was new. Personally I actually really like this show and there's way better episodes, but I'm sur it was Prof's choice, so is what it is.

Maybe it had to do with the creators liking each other, which I think was the same reason the Grim x KND crossover happened.

ShyRanger

Still surprised we never got a Danny × FOP crossover. Always thought the Jimmy × FOP ones were an odd pairing...but it was neat anyway, haha. That could be a future ep...or future poll, crossover cartoon eps!
