TalKing of the Hill - Husky Bobby

On this week's episode of TalKing of the Hill, Bobby finds his calling when he's scouted for the modeling industry in a plus-size clothing store. Obviously, Hank isn't thrilled about this, and to make things worse, Bobby's big fashion show moment of fame could end  in tragedy if his dad doesn't race to the rescue. Listen in and learn about the advanced polymers used in making giant overalls, the mysterious contents of Bobby's scrapbook, and just how much love it takes to crush a little boy's dream. So sit back, and remember to keep your pride to yourself!

Oh same here. I was 14 when they shut down but I use to buy shoes with my parents all the time. I think they converted it to a planet fitness years later lol.

Second that! Another Houstonian here, I vaguely remember Weiner’s from when I was a young young kid.

I loved this show so much. I’m so happy to revisit it with you both!

When you mentioned the local or regional chain store, first thing that came to my mind was weiners out in Houston. They closed in 2004, long before the octopus known as Amazon took over the world. But it was a small chain store in Houston that offered affordable shoes and clothing.

I was disappointed you guys missed commenting on Hank’s predilection for Reagan. “I miss voting for that man...” Hank would have been a Rick Perry guy IMO.

Again I will refer you back to that Rob Paulsen interview I linked to for a voice acting legend who knows more about this than you on the current status quo and importance of more representative casting in animation. Your arguments are covered in dust, long ago addressed as not particularly useful. “Anyone can play anything” is not the deepest response to “an historical lack of diversity in voice acting is why the world of voice acting is overly white, leaving people of color with fewer opportunities for career growth, and recasting roles to be more representative is a motion towards trying to fix that lack of diversity.” - Henry

How was anything I said disrespectful? Nor am I arguing against diversity, you are actually you a limiting actors to their ethnicity or gender. Voice acting is a profession where you can play literally any role be it a talking animal, an alien, any gender, any race, literally anything with a voice anyone can play. Nor am I claiming that Phil Lamar is against diverse casting, I'm using as an example of selective outrage. He's one of the most used voice actors ( for a reason he's one of the best) they could have gone with an Japanese voice actor for Jack but they didn't. Voice acting isn't about what you look like it's about how you sound.

People have had notes about these specific roles for years, and the creators are trying to fix that casting imbalance https://www.indiewire.com/2018/07/bobs-burgers-cast-more-women-comic-con-2018-1201986298/ and LaMarr here https://twitter.com/phillamarr/status/1276203554802331650?s=20 Times are changing, people are more aware of these things, and more opportunities are happening. Here’s also acting vet Rob Paulsen addressing it https://youtu.be/Pgc_aVfjbRg. It’s incorrect to cite actors who are on record as supporting more diverse casting like they don’t want that. And please be more respectful of our community. - Henry

That's a relatively small pool of voice actors even smaller when you go into minorities. So why no out rage for Phil Lamar voicing Samurai Jack or the male voice actors for Linda and Tina Belcher? Voice acting is a job for anyone regardless of ethnicity or gender. And to limit actors based on how they look compared to the character they may voice is ridiculous and reductive.

In 2017 Backstage cited an average of 200 auditions per role for voiceover with 9,000 voiceover performances a month within SAG-AFTRA membership of 160k. And Union work is smaller than non-union work so nah bro I don’t think I’m imagining things when I say there’s a wide pool of talent outside the same stable of 5 people who appear in every cartoon.

Justen Brown

I think you just imagined this "massive" talent pool. Voice actors aren't a dime a dozen.

As of right now, my jacket is hanging on my Peleton bike........

Elliot Long

I don't think Hank would vote for cruz. Mostly because he was born in Canadia, but Hank would have been mortified by his abandonment.

T

The question you should be asking is that when given a massive pool of diverse talent why shouldn’t more effort be given to casting diverse actors? Thankfully we are at the point where casting directors are seeking newer talent and established actors are turning down roles they don’t think is appropriate.

Justen Brown

That still doesn't answer why? Why is Phil Lamar as Samurai Jack fine but Kahns an issue, or Linda and Tina Belcher I guess they need to be voiced by women now. Or even Bobby should voiced by a 14 year old fat white boy not a middle aged white woman

I said that it's understandable at that point in time why they did it, but now they should definitely get an asian actor. Look at the Simpsons' recent initiative to give minority characters to minority actors -- it became a positive because it opened up opportunities for POC actors. And the white actors that used to voice them still voice a billion characters so they'll be fine. I still like Kahn a lot and Toby did some great acting with that role BUT there were no conversations about minority characters being voiced by white actors back then so I let it pass. But voice actors and casting directors should know better now and I'm 100% on board with the push to have POC characters voiced by POC actors. (ETA: I also stressed in the podcast that my experience was a privileged one. I grew up in a highly asian-populated city, and many other asian kids were/are not as lucky and I would understand if they were made uncomfortable by a character like Kahn, especially if they're Laotian.)

And? Voice actors got into the job so they could play any role not just whatever fits their physical description. Phil Lamar voices SAMURAI Jack, but he's not Japanese, Linda and Tina Belcher both voiced by men. That's kinda the whole point about voice acting your physical appearance ( gender and ethnicity) are completely irrelevant. You guys even had an Asian Canadian woman tell you that a white man voicing Kahn was fine. Let the voice actors and casting directors make those decisions.

That documentary came out in 2013, and a lot of conversations about the topic have happened since then, especially in the last few years. - Bob

Talking Simpsons

How did you guys watch "I know that voice" and walk away still thinking the voice actor has to match the ethnicity of the character they are voicing

If Bobby has been on that stage, he would have been so magnificent the only thing the teenagers would throw at him would be RESPECT, I tell you what.
