What A Cartoon! - Death Note "Rebirth"

This week, we're covering a crossover anime hit sponsored by premium patron Loki! On the surface, the premise for Death Note sounds absurd: a magical notebook that kills someone if you write their name in it. Despite the outlandish premise, this hit manga series captured the attention of readers worldwide with its cat-and-mouse psychological thriller antics—all built on the foundation of very sound internal logic. And thankfully, the anime version adapts this compelling story as faithfully as possible. So listen in as we discuss the very first episode of Death Note, and try not to get hooked!

Good Lord. Well, any of them have to be better than the Netflix one.

Turns out there are FIVE Japanese live-action movies, and one American (the Netflix one)

Ah, I just meant the Netflix one. Forgot there were others! In this case, my bad!

littleterr0r

Which one? There are at least 4 of them. The first Japanese one was well-received and I liked it a lot. The second one was all right--I think not as well received as the first, but people were still satisfied?

Clearly Bob you didn't do any research on the Death Note movie because I've never heard of anyone even remotely liking it 😆

Just started reading Death Note, based on this podcast. I watched 6-7 episodes of the show a couple of years ago, but dropped off. Really enjoying the manga. Just finished chapter 13, and can't believe there's 108 chapters. Excited to see where it goes.

Billy Bat got a mention! Please check out Billy Bat everyone. I translated a good... 90-something chapters of it.

Platinum End is available on Shonen Jump but because it's a mature title you can only read it on the web. From what I read it seemed a little too close to Death Note, just replacing Shinigami with angels. But maybe it takes another twist later on and gets more interesting.

Just always grab the sake cup if you can.

I loved Death Note enough that it's the only anime I bought a wall scroll for, and also a neat keychain. If I remember right one of the DS videogames is basically a version of mafia/werewolf/other lying traitor games where one person is Kira and everyone else is trying to figure out who it is. An incredibly perfect fit for the license. But really what I wanted to talk about here is koi koi and shogi. They both have a significant learning curve at the beginning but are actually fairly simple to play (koi koi moreso, and obviously there's a lot more to the actual strategy of playing shogi well.) My own experience in terms of familiarizing myself with the cards and pieces basically involved staring at them for a few days and playing just a little bit until they were committed to memory. Koi Koi doesn't have all that many scoring combinations, but the important scoring cards are spread among the twelve suits in a way you just have to memorize over time; there's a lot of luck involved and most of the strategy involves either racing to make a scoring combination first or trying to thwart your opponent's plans by scooping up cards they need. Your ability to do either is largely luck based, though.

If you're into the Dubs the live action movies use the same actors for the english VO. Which is pretty cool and you dont see that often.

I hope you don't consider this too much of a spoiler (it's a reveal that happens in episode 2 iirc) but I'm very surprised you didn't bring up the fact that Light's father is a police officer and how that obviously must've effected Light's views on crime and the justice system.

I didn't know about the Shonen Jump app or how affordable it is! Totally subscribing to it! Thanks!

Thank you for doing Death Note, Bob and Henry. You added the term 'Success Robot' to my lexicon, and I now have a way to describe the kind of person I was in high school as a product of the Bush administration's 'No Child Left Behind' initiative. Also, since you mentioned the Shonen Jump app in this episode, I'd love to hear if you have continued with The Promised Neverland manga and if either of you are reading anything new, like Mashle or Chainsaw Man.

That's awesome!

I'm doing the cardinal sin of commenting before finishing the episode, but I wanted to mention that in 2011 my Simpsons Death Note fanart also appeared in the background of an anime called Mayo Chiki https://twitter.com/spacecoyotl/status/756160708715294720?s=20

While I’d OBVIOUSLY heard about the show before and have friends who have seen it, I’d never actually dipped my toes into it before the last week because of this podcast coming out. As of writing this, I’m on episode 21 and enjoying the hell out of it, and very glad it’s not running in circles or just ticking off mystery/cat & mouse detective story tropes as it goes. This first episode didn’t totally hook me, in part because of how much exposition was needed to set up the premise of the show properly. Even though I’m only about 2/3rds of the way through the show, it’s funny how little Ryuk talks now compared to the early episodes before we meet L and there’s much more solo exposition and thinking going on with Light. Basically, the less Ryuk explains the Death Note and the more he just appears to laugh at whatever situation Light has gotten himself into, the better the show has been. Needlessly to say, at this point I am enjoying it enough that I’m going to see it through to the end, and once again I have What A Cartoon! to thank for finally giving me the push I needed to check it out.
