Talk to the Audience?!? - August 2020

Whew, another month in the history books as summer reaches its last days. We've had another fun month as we reflect on some decidedly political Simpsons news, chat about the upcoming miniseries and tease some other fun plans, we have a quick chat with Simpsons collector BartOfDarkness about his new podcast Simpsons Is Greater Than..., AND we close it out with us reading some of our favorite comments on Patreon. Listen on your phone or BusyBox!

re: Harry Shearer's comments - Not defending him but I believe the issue with characters of color wasn't who voiced them but being played as stereotypes. There isn't any outrage with Dr Hibbert or Lou the cop but with Apu because of his characterization. And yes, I agree that more opportunities should be open to voice actors of color but this may be creating a new problem for animated shows. While a network program like The Simpsons can afford to hire new voice actors, will programs with smaller budgets decide not to create new characters of color because it will add to their bottom line? Of course shows that are not socially conscious won't care but others might. And if shows do hire actors of color to play these new characters, will they push those actors to put more of an affectation to their performance to make them sound more like a stereotype to ensure they do not sound white?. It never entered my mind that Darth Vader or Martian Manhunter (on Justice League Unlimited) were African American even though they were played by AA actors. There are many layers to this issue but all agree that the problem with Apu was an obvious one.

BTW Ian is literally the only person I’d want to hear about Sonic from so good on that score. Also maybe my bud Jonathan Gray, who drew/draws the Sonic comic, too.

Thanks!

I'm so happy to hear you guys are gonna be covering the pilot for Malcolm in the Middle. My mom passed away recently and I've been rewatching the show since we would always watch it together in syndication while I was in high school. My recent rewatch was originally just of favorite episodes (mostly mid to later episodes to my surprise), but I quickly just found myself rewatching the whole show. There were plenty of single camera sitcoms that came after it, but I never felt like any of them ever hit the heights this show did. I also thank this show for getting me into TMBG! I can't unsee your Linnell Flansburgh comparison now haha!!

Can’t believe you guys never heard Midnight City. When I visited California in 2012 we heard it a bunch on the 405. I totally associate it with LA driving now whenever I hear it, which isn’t that infrequent.

Now that they've pointed it out; I 100% agree that Bob and Henry are the John Linnell and John Flansburgh of the podcasting world.

Daria was robbed!

DON'T TEMPT ME. I WILL BUY LAVERN AND SHRILEY JOIN THE ARMY ON DVD AND I WILL WATCH ALL OF THOSE EPISODES AND PICK ONE AND MAYBE EVEN WATCH SOME HAPPY DAYS! Ah who'm I kidding...

I think it would be interesting to a study or something on couples who can say they were brought together by the Simpsons. For example, I met my Life Partner in college and we would hang out Thursday nights to watch the Simpsons. Over the season we grew closer until we started dating by the summer. The new school year brought the Simpsons in syndication. Simpsons had always had a huge influence on our relationship. We had a Homer and Marge dolls as cake toppers at our wedding and we will be celebrating our 20th anniversary in September. We've been to Simpsons Land in Orlando twice and constantly use Simpsons quotes in our conversations. She jokes that if they ever cancel The Simpsons, we'll have to get a divorce.

Gotta day I am beyond excited for Malcolm, even more so than strangers with candy. I know a lot of people say that when they grew up poor or from a dysfunctional family that they really felt Roseann captured for them for the first time on TV but I never felt that way. They were far too nice to each other. Malcolm on the other hand was the first time I really felt like I was looking at my own family on TV all the stuff they had was essentially the same as what we had the same furniture the same clothing the same dishware my parents worked odd hours when I was a little kid too and there was always tons of yellling. I also really appreciated the portrayal of Malcolm on TV because for the first time ever for better or for worse there was a character who is me a kid in gifted class who didn’t necessarily want to be there or didn’t like school because he just got into trouble because he had that impulsivity streak with the show never really mentioned is that Malcolm and all the kids really all have ADHD. The show really holds up to and I love re-watching it now because it’s like looking back into my childhood for late elementary school and middle school because the clothing the fashion the attitudes the slang is all pretty much that and if I ever have kids I would show them this if they wanted to get an idea of what it was like for their dad to grow up. Plus the show is pretty much tied to the Simpsons for me because in syndication it always ran one episode of The Simpsons one episode of Malcolm and then another episode of The Simpsons for three days a week for years only occasionally being mixed up with Sienfelds

Gahhhhh, that really sucks. He seemed nice when I saw him in basketball game I was at but man, that sucks.

He’s not like Scott Baio vocal in his support, but Muniz is def a conservative who prefers Trump https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/frankie-muniz-comes-kanye-west-163907760.html

Talking Simpsons

I don't think I've seen anything to indicate Muniz was a MAGA guy

Just like the delaying of Mel Gibson, having Malcom next week is just prolonging the inevitable death of Maude Flanders. Just kind of a funny coincidence that these extra episodes are putting off universally unpopular moments in Simpsons canon
