Changes are Coming to the Talking Simpsons and What A Cartoon! Schedules in 2020

No, no! The Talking Simpsons Network has not disbanded! It's the end of another great year of podcasts for us here, and we've had the chance to sit down and think about 2020, and what it means for our shows.

In December alone, we're releasing 17 episodes. That's a lot of content! And while we're happy to provide it, towards the end of the year we started feeling like we're spreading ourselves a little thin. And, since starting the Talking Simpsons Network, we've each gone through (and are continuing to go through) some significant life changes that reduced our free time. Ultimately, we're most concerned with quality—and hitting deadlines—so we came up with a plan that will help us allocate our podcasting resources more responsibly.

What does this mean for you? The last week of every month will change in a way that won't disrupt our flow, and will also lighten our load a bit so we can concentrate on live shows, interviews, traveling to record with remote guests, and all of the other assorted duties that go into running a podcast network. That said, here's what's in store for each show in 2020.

Talking Simpsons: The last episode of every month will be replaced by the latest episode of Talk to the Audience?!?, our community podcast. While we'll still exclusively take comments and questions from the Patreon, we thought we'd make the community-cast free in order to give everyone out there a taste of how great our Patreon community is. There are other places to discuss our podcast on the internet, but the best (and most) discussions happen right here on the Patreon!

What A Cartoon!: The last episode of every month will be replaced by an extended preview of the newest episode of What A Cartoon Movie! While we love WAC Movie! (and you clearly love it too), producing one WAC Movie takes three times as long as one WAC! We'd like everything to release as scheduled without the possibility of delays, and we'll be beefing up these WAC Movie! previews from 20 minutes to 45 or more, so this change is definitely in our—and your—best interests.

We've also produced nearly 100 episodes of WAC! to date, which means we've also produced nearly 100 complete histories of different cartoon series. Digging deep into cartoon history is one of the best parts of our job, but this heavy research eats up valuable recording and editing time. To resolve this issue, once a month—and twice if said month has five Mondays—we'll be revisiting a series we've already covered on WAC!, so we can cut straight to the meat of the episode (since the history section has already been taken care of).

We'll still be covering two new series every month, but you'll also get to hear takes on new episodes from series we've already covered. That means if you were were hoping for a different episode to be picked from a series we podcasted about, now there's a chance it'll happen!

To sum things up:

We hope you're on board with our changes for 2020! We still have so much great stuff coming up next year, like a live show in January—with more to come—two new miniseries, and lots of surprise guests on all of our shows! As always, let us know if you have any questions or concerns in the comments below. Thanks for a fantastic 2019!

Hooray to Bob and Henry making these quality-of-life changes so they don't become Hans Moleman!

I’m super excited that you’ll be returning to series you’ve already covered on What A Cartoon! Can’t wait for the next Batman TAS episode. The volume and quality of content you’ve been putting out recently has been unreal. I’m glad to hear you’re making some changes to keep your workload sustainable. Thank you both for keeping me thoroughly entertained every week! ❤️

Erick Hohnstein-Van Etten

The changes sound great! I'm glad you're finding a way to keep up the level of quality without going insane. That being said, I've got some ideas to improve the shows: 1. Nina needs to be louder, angrier, and have access to a time machine. 2. Whenever Nina’s not in an episode, all the other hosts and guests should be asking "Where's Nina”? 3.

This all sounds perfectly fine to me! I usually end up listening to the WAC movie and the community podcast on weekends (or if I'm doing more commuting than usual) anyway, so this will basically just sub them into my week at the end of each month. And revisiting some prior shows for a new episode of WAC is something I've wanted with certain shows, and was happy to see for Ren & Stimpy so none of this is a downside, really. Anything to make it easier on your end!

These are really great workarounds and solutions, so I commend you guys on figuring out a way to keep pumping out so much content without skimping on the quality! I'm actually really excited for this. And...not that you're asking for suggestions, but...if you revist an episode of the 90s Spider-Man, I highly suggest "Hydro-Man" from season 2. It's a really interesting (mostly) standalone episode that actually has GORGEOUS animation, probably the best of the show, and some extremely well-written mature themes. We just covered it on our Spider-Man cartoon podcast and were floored by how much it stands out from the rest of the show, and I'd love to hear you guys' takes!

I just looked at what I said and what you said and realized the impracticaloty of it. Though what you are saying is implying WAC movies will come out last Mondays monthly, which more than makes up for the week. Consider my concern cheerfully withdrawn

Boomer Spacely

Yeah, dang, I was wondering how you guys had time for literally anything with all the content you produce. I'm all for the changes. And I'm happy to hear you'll be revisiting previously-covered series; I'd love to hear different episodes of shows like Dexter's Lab and Rugrats covered.

Whatever is healthiest for you two, have at it! I'll be happy to hear it when it comes, but no rush.

Bennett Billard

I am all for this change. You two need to take care of yourselves. I learned that the hard way last year and I burned out.

Angel

Really though, I approve on scaling back but if I could make a humble suggestion, could the off week possibly be staggered? As cool as I am with scaling back, regular podcast listeres would be out a Monday and shortened a Wednesday podcast in the same week? Just a thought. We'll make it work regardless 🙂

Boomer Spacely

I feel like this was inevitable, because as I and many people have told you, you guys do a lot of work and provide a shitload of content every week. Scale back. Give yourselves a fucking break.

Thad Komorowski

I’m totally onboard with these changes. Like you guys say, better to put quality over quantity.

Harry Thornton

ok cool
