Talking Futurama - A Clone of My Own
Added 2019-12-27 08:00:02 +0000 UTC
We've finally reached the end of Talking Futurama Season Two Part One! And our second 2019 miniseries comes to a close with the introduction of the eighth (and seldom seen) member of Planet Express, Cubert! When Professor Farnsworth realizes his days are numbered, he dusts off an annoying clone he hopes will carry on his legacy—but Cubert is more interested in pointing out the numerous flaws in Futurama's world. When Farnsworth's depression makes him opt for an early, permanent retirement on the Near Death Star, the gang finds themselves in a race against time to save him from a fate worse than death! Will they save him in time? Get off our lawn and get ready for another great podcast!
Thanks so much for your support! Without it, we couldn't do miniseries like the one you just listened to! Please stick with us in 2020 for even more great podcasts and fun surprises! - Henry and Bob

I don’t have depth perception (thanks, strabismus!) and I can do King Fu kicks perfectly. I assume.

Ready to Rumble might not have been a union shoot, but wrestlers taking acting gigs to get a SAG card is definitely a thing. Mick Foley said in one of his books that the main reason he appeared in the Insane Clown Posse's movie Big Money Hustlas was that it was a union shoot and he wanted to get on SAG's health insurance.

I had no idea that Qbert was originally going to be in a lot more of the show (or that it's the same actor as Phil & Lil, which is now SO OBVIOUS) but even as a kid I was definitely annoyed to death by him in this episode, and to lesser extents in his other appearances during the original seasons. I did enjoy how much he gets shit on (and still kind of do), but other than serving as a representation of pedant fans complaining about science and plot holes (in one episode), he really doesn't need to exist so kudos to them for realizing that eventually.

I really enjoyed Zoidberg telling the professor, "If only your time machine worked and then you could go back and not waste your time on it." Of course, if it had worked, the time working on it wouldn't have been a waste, which is the basic time travel paradox you see in every piece of media that employs the plot device.

I actually like Cubert and Dwight as a duo, and had completely forgotten until this re-watch how much Cubert sucks in his original form

There is a Comedy Central era episode called “The Tip of the Zoidberg” that goes into great detail about Zoidberg and Farnsworth first meeting under the employ of Mom. I don’t think it’s a great episode overall, but the lore-building bits are fun. Another one that builds a little (but not much) is “Möbius Dick” which goes into early Zoidberg and The Professor interacting with Farnsworth’s first crew, as well as showing that crew’s fate

Two of the things mentioned in the episode (returning to the Near-death Star and the residents living in virtual retirement homes) actually do get revisited in one of the comedy central episodes!

I think Cubert deserves more credit for accurately predicting the content *and* delivery style of every single one of those Cinema Sins videos on YouTube.
