The Green Mile Reaction

Ths misconception is John is a angel when in fact he is the second coming of Christ, like Christ John also died for the sins of man kind

My attempts to answer the questions yy asked or clear up points of confusion you had while watching this film. Percy's line near the beginning, "Dead man, dead man walking, we got a dead man walking here," is based on an old tradition in prisons where they would shout that while bringing a prisoner in in order to further humiliate and scare the the condemned. It also served to intimidate already incarcerated inmates who would hear it. I don't believe they do that anymore. It was a nice way of showing Paul's compassion that he didn't like Percy doing it. Micheal Clarke Duncan (John Coffey) was six five (he passed away a while back). He was a big boy, but they made him look even bigger in this film. They used a lot of neat camera work and other tricks to give the illusion of increased sze, including having him walk along a raised platform. In the shots where he is walking on it, they film him only from the waist up. They also built a special smaller bed and version of Old Sparky for him to lie or sit on, so that he appeared bigger than he actually is. The guard whom they called Brutal. His name is Brutus. In the movie, Paul's wife Jan called him that once, and in the book it's written that way a few times. In the book, it's explained that the nickname Brutus is sort of a joke, because he's extremely gentle. Occasionally, in the movie, they also call him Brute for short. I've had a big crush on Brutal since I first saw this movie. There's just something about him. Rehersals were legally required for executions. I believe they still are. It's done because so many things can go so horribly wrong, and the legal ramifications if they do are so huge for all involved. All it takes is one slip, one missed step, and the whole thing turns into a nightmare. . Fifteen mice were trained to play the role of Mister Jingles. Each one was trained to perform a specific trick on screen. There was no CGI and no animatronics. They were real mice. You'll notice that Paul's toilet is an outhouse, but the prison had indoor plumbing. This is because, while indoor plumbing had become a thing by the time in which the movie takes place, most rural areas like where Paul lives often didn't get it until much later. It's accurate to the times. At the table with Paul and his wife, the men were talking as if John was guilty and going over a plan for what to do if he escapes because they did not have proof that he was innocent at the time. Thry needed to still consider the fact that he might not be innocent, and what would happen if he tried to get away. They were therefore worried about his size because he's so much stronger than them. We know he couldn't likely try, but if he became frightened enough, they had to consider that he might. If he did, he could easily overpower them. It sounds cold-blooded, but they had to think like that. Within the prison system, a trustee is an inmate who has proven himself deserving of extra privileges and tasks through good behavior. Yes, Toot Toot was a convicted felon and a condemned man, but as per his status as a trustee, he was given the job of standing in for prisoners during executions. Prispners would often accept such roles because it breaks up the monotony of the day and gives them interaction. In the book, before John is put to death, there is a scene where the rehearsal for his execution is carried out. Toot did the rehersalso for everyone else, but for John's, Paul stood in for him. He chose to do this because he and all the other guards who knew John agreed that to have someone as irreverent and clownish as Toot do it would be disrespectful to John's. I always thought it was a nice touch that I would have loved to see in the film, because it shows how much Paul cared for and respected John. According to what I read online, since John is a Jesus-figure, Mister Jingles, in his tiny size, was meant to symbolize the smallness of man in the face of God. That's why John is made to appear so huge. The description Hal gave of his wife swearing might not have sounded like a big deal, but it would be, especially if she used to be so sweet and gentle, and what, at that time, would be considered a proper lady. Any dreastic change in behavior like that is going to be unsettling and even scary, because a change that drastic and sudden usually means something neurological is wrong. And you saw hoe extreme her behavior was when John came to her. Hal having to hear her shouting obsenities like that all the time would be heartbreaking because she's like a completely different person who must come across as if she hates him. In the book, he explains that it gets so bad that he has to sleep in another room at night. I' m betting you could see why he was so freaked out once you sawwhat he was talking about play out on screen. Oh, and regarding the scene where Paul is sitting with Mr Hammersmith (John's lawyer), and he's telling him about his dog attacking his son as a way of explaining how John would suddenly have murdered those two girls with no other acts of violence in his past. He said that his dog was a sweet type that just randomly attacked his son. In the book version of the same scene, there is an added detail that the boy sometimes pulled the dog's tail. The implication being that the boy was picking on the dog when it attacked. Makes you wonder how differently Hammersmith would have handled things had he known this. Did you notice that Paul left John;s eyes open when he gave him the necklace and he was covered with his death shroud? I've heard people say that they should have closed his eyes, and while I get why, I've always seen that part a little differently. John was afraid of the dark. I always saw it that Paul left his eyes open so that he would never be in the dark again. Blue: It'll be over soon. He's going to pass, and he's going to be in a better place. To me, I always see it as being bigger than that. In death, John isn't just going to a better place. He's going home. Such an emotional and heartfelt reaction to a powerful movie. Thanks for letting us watch this onw with you, Blue.
