2021-11-06 16:29:42 +0000 UTCI saw this in the theater when it came out and it instantly became my favorite movie. I already had really liked Tom Hanks and had said he was probably my favorite actor at the time. He hasn't disappointed me. I remember being mad at Jenny also when I came out of the movie. I think it's because of the many times she left him when he always had an open hand for her. But, on subsequent viewings, I only feel very sad for her. She got screwed up very badly very early on and subsequently made bad choices in her life that kept spiraling down. She was digging herself into a hole which, I think, was the bottom when she got out on that ledge. The two lines from her that sort of illuminate her character is when she asked Forrest, "Why are you so good to me?' earlier (I believe it was right after she was singing naked in that club). This shows that she feels that there is something WRONG with Forrest treating her good. She feels she doesn't deserve it. The other is when she turned his marriage proposal down when she said, "You don't wanna marry me." She cannot see in her anything close to the good that he sees in her. She looks at herself as broken and that he's too good for her. Eventually, she gets her life together which, if you think about it, many people never do. They keep digging themselves into a hole until they die there. But, she eventually did. I think it was the last time she left in the early morning after sleeping with him that is kinda the straw that broke the camel's back for many people. It might've been mine and therefore I was angry at her after that and had the same reaction where I was like, "Oh, you contact him now that you're dying?" He accepts her and I was gonna say he forgave her but there wasn't even that. He just accepts her and that is why he's the best of us. She got her life together, better late than never, and he did the correct thing in accepting that. That should be commended 'cause, like I said, not everyone does. We, as viewers, just wish she would've come to the realizations sooner, before she got sick. But, as I was saying, all the viewings after the first viewing have me feeling terrible for her and not mad at her at all. She WAS broken, for a LONG time, for reasons out of her control. She had to hit bottom and, I'm guessing, get a new perspective on her life after she became a mother to really realize that she wasn't going to break Forrest by being with him. She thought she was bad for him. She didn't realize how resilient Forrest was nor that she was hurting him more by leaving him than she would've by staying with him. Yeah, I view Jenny as a pitiable character, but not a mean, malicious nor stupid character. Another of my favorite Tom Hanks movies that I think you'd really like and should react to is "Joe vs. The Volcano." It's not as heavy as this one but it is thoughtful, when it's not being absurd. ;-) It's basically a modern day fairytale.
