It's hard to describe the effect Star Wars had on the US movie industry and the audience. The movie industry was in a strange, experimental place in the 1970's after the collapse of the old studio system which had been in place up to the 1950's. When it came out in May 1977 it was like Lucas had reinvented the wheel and changed the way Hollywood did business for the next 40+ years. I wish you could see the original version and not the tweaked version Lucas put out.
