I think that "god is dead" line was a reference to Friedrich Nietzsche, a great german philosopher who said it first. When the teacher asked Mash why he's here, he went philosophical with it. He seems to be a deep thinker, because when he was asked what a maze is, his answer was philosophy.
The guy is only simple on the outside but is computing stuff deeply.

Haha, this does give a lot of Harry Potter vibes. I think I also saw a glimpse of Malfoy like character there! Also, the answer to the Sphinx's riddle is man (humans), in the morning (that is when we are babies) he walks on four legs, in the afternoon (that is, in adulthood) he walks on two legs, and in the evening (in old age), he walks on three (2 legs and a stick for support). It is a classic riddle!
