It was called Brain Dance. It's like deep dive into a person's memories. Shit is wild to think about

So what happen at the beginning is the thrifter got the memory chip from the dead convict and it was like a replay of his last moments before he died? I think that;s what that is.- So it really happened but the kid didn't do it, was just replaying it as a VR experience

I think you probably would have needed to play the game to really understand what BD's are because I am on ep 4 and they still haven't explained it but I knew what they were because of the pc game.
Basically many people have something similar to a go pro in their brain (in digital form) always playing/recording what you see and hear. So when you die, doctors actually can take these BD (stands for Brain Dive if I remember correctly) which are when you link into another persons memories and the biggest rush is experiencing death from the perspective of someone who just died. This was all in the game that so many people so called hated but I enjoyed it.
So he wasn't controlling the guy, since he has some kind of deal with the doctor (doctors aren't supposed to allow regular people to have access to newly dead peoples recorded memories..) he was able to experience first hand the death of that dude.
