Super Mario Bros. (1993): Movie FULL LENGTH Reaction! PATREON COMMISSION!

*BOB-OMBED HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

Thanks to patron L Freya for commissioning this blast from the past! 1993 was an EPIC year for movies in the United States - the good, the bad, and the dinosaur-themed!

This was actually a ton of fun to re-watch after not seeing it in 15+ years and realizing how insane it is and bonkers...but not in an un-fun way, surprisingly! I hope you enjoy my manic watch through and thank you for the commission!

Super Mario Bros. (1993): Movie FULL LENGTH Reaction! PATREON COMMISSION!

Comments

1993 was a golden year of cinema, CLEARLY! This movie was so much fun and yessss, I was so sad for YEARS after I lost that Mario book moving, so when it was reprinted, I was ELATED! Thank you for the kind words and for waiting on me to get to this comment - apologies for the wait! I was SO into the 90’s Brooklyn vibe - I’m a sucker for it, haha, blame the English dubs of Yu-Gi-Oh! And Sailor Moon! 😛 There definitely is a Stranger Things vibe to the opening, which is fun to consider – and yeah, there honestly was a LOT of detail put into the sets and designs of this bonkers film; you have to at least appreciate the effort, I feel. Oohhhh, I remember that discussion between my brother and I! AHAHA!! My brother doesn’t like this film at all, but I have nostalgia goggles on for it hardcore, so I love that you picked up on that - when you recommended it as an option I was instantly on board! <3 And getting to watch something I haven’t seen since I was an “elder teen” was fun! The 90’s references were just chef’s kisses for me throughout! I have so much fun with a Brooklyn accent…hmmm…when I think valley girl, I think of Heaven Official’s Blessings novel reactions hahaha but that’s a story all its own - but yes, it was a financial failure, and I can honestly see why considering what they were SUPPOSED to be referencing with the game…but yeah, the 90’s were a dino bonanza and I think Jurassic Park was a big part of that, or maybe the stars aligned for this movie to be with the dino theme, too – I looked it up and We’re Back: A Dinosaur’s Story came out in 1993 TOO! What was this development atmosphere?! I am honestly going to blame Land Before Time - which came out in 1988 and was probably the inspiration behind Spielberg, this movie’s creator, and Don Bluth jumping on the Dino train too! I have no doubt that they were part of my favorite color being green…that and me finding out my birthstone is Emerald! 😛 But Sailor Jupiter was one of my favorites, too, and her uniform was green, sooooo… I thought that the actors were doing the best they could with 90’s cheese and the plot given to them! To be fair with the dad being a fungus, In the video game Mario Brothers 3, the king gets turned into all sorts of things and when Mario “beats” Bowser, he magically gets changed back, so that was the ONE continuity that actually worked! Hahaha!! NOTHING and I mean NOTHING will top the Utena Motorcycle scene. Ever. hahaha, not even a contest! But it was a lot of fun in this movie! But yeah, Lena’s wardrobe was one I would have stole and could have rivaled Nanami’s drip from RGU, I agree! Honestly, if you told me she was an aunt, I’d believe it! Ooohhh, with the egg episode…are we thinking Nanami was originally a dinosaur from a parallel universe? Would explain a LOT, honestly. 😛 The bob-omb - I wonder if I can get a set piece online from the movie..I would take that or a bullet bill replica, honestly! But they did look like Happy Meal toys! Hahaha I wouldn't have been surprised either! Thank you so much for the comment, the kind words, and the commission! This was honestly a LOT of fun and I’m so happy I had a reason to re-watch it!

Thank you so much for the comment and the kind words! This was such a wild, nostalgic trip for me! And yesss, whimsy meets dystopian! The 90's camp was EVERYWHERE! And yesssssss....ahem....that theme of resistance? Ahem...the connection to modern times was so on point, I honestly had to adjust my glasses! I never imagined this series to be so relevant, but here we are! I think that most of the slime of the 90's was borrowed for this movie! Seriously, the physical effects were borderline gross-out humor, but somehow not over the top! Yes, L Freya did amazing with this commission, so thanks to them and to you for the comment! :D

Loved the reaction and discussion! I don’t think I’d actually seen this one before so this was an absolutely hilarious watchalong! 😂 This was such a fun example of a very specific trend from the 90s: remaking beloved whimsical classic universes into slapstick dystopias. True 90s camp! And Mad Max was a very good comparison. 🤣 Themes of resistance?... An underground rebellion against the tyrant attempting to enforce total control, secret police, multi-level kennel prison/cages, literal ‘devolution’ of citizens… Honestly, wow. The physical special effects were hilariously disgusting, I think they used all the slime they could get their hands on. Thank you to L Freya for another amazing commission! 🥰 Looking forward to next week! 💙

Who knew?! 1993 blessed us with Jurassic Park, then swept this literal diamond in the rough under the rug, such a ridiculous dinosaur-featuring game adaptation! Hearing you had to rebuy the lost Mario book from your childhood was a fun detail! I really enjoyed how into the 90s Brooklyn vibe you were at the beginning, totally agree the first ~30 minutes before we get deeper into the craziness is my favorite, it taps into that Stranger Things authenticity of the era that just can be so captivating, before it goes off the rails a bit! Seeing the sets of the alternate dimension though, what a treat for the eyes, so much detail put everywhere! So, a little back story on the commission for this - it is thanks to a little sibling debating of yours actually! During either a One Piece or Arcane discussion - I forgot, as it's been a bit - this movie came up for some reason and you put it out you felt the movie probably held up, while your brother was having none of that! I thought, that sounds like a fun time, and it's been even more than fifteen years since I've seen it, so let's find out! And it looks like it landed somewhere in the middle! So many fun 90s movies referenced / compared to in your reaction, including Home Alone - that is such a good time! No question about that one holding up, I rewatched that a few years back with my daughter and it was a blast! I will never fully understand the decision to make this movie so far removed from what is one of the most recognizable brands you had in the 90s - financially probably not the best choice! I think if they took a more Who Framed Roger Rabbit approach of blending live action with cartoons, we could have maybe come out a bit better? I had to check the budget - 48 million (sadly looks even lower) - grossing only 38.9 million worldwide - which made it a financial failure. I did enjoy it, especially along with the reaction, nonetheless! Your Brooklyn accents were so funny! I might need to come up with a good valley girl movie one day haha! Yes, the 90s were definitely dinosaur city! We even had a restaurant nearby until recently called Dinosaur Bar-B-Que - which was pretty great! I wonder if all those dinosaur movies maybe had some role in the green color being your favorite? Luigi all flustered, asking Daisy "Do you eat?" haha! John Leguizamo and Bob Hoskins were great, I wish we had more of an origin story before getting into the plot, but it's nice they just generally keep the movie moving along at a fast pace. And Daisy's father is a fungus - I did not remember that at all! How he just magically turns back at the end with no explanation, haha, well why the heck not right? It's not like we've got to worry about winning any Oscars. The car chase scene was fun - not quite a crazy as the Utena movie, or a Bond movie, but they make it fit the theme of the movie pretty well! Mario taking pleasure in the destruction of everything towards the end checks out too. The custom budget all went to Lena's wardrobe indeed! She's got that Nanami drip going on, maybe a distant Aunt? We do even get Nanami with eggs one episode too, so maybe! In one of the strangest episodes of the show for sure, complete with Saionji cooking eggs over a bbq in the middle of the night! It's so weird they made all the items so tiny! The bob-omb and the bullet bill, and "the bomb is worse than what you would find at an artist ally at a convention," haha! Yes! It looks like a McDonald's toy - right? I would not be surprised! Thanks for this! It was a blast! 😊
