True that. I’ve asked for ONE double chapter once we are in Asphodel but it FEELS like every chapter is twice as pronounced as stuff from Sholomance

2024-08-13 21:17:13 +0000 UTCI mean, it did eat the inheritance of her entire murdered civilization, the only thing she has of the people she once loved. Then it destabilized her only source of leverage over a world explicitly racist against her, causing even more people to act racistly against her. Then it murdered three people apparently for fun. Treating it as a hostile entity bound to her soul is entirely reasonable. That's what it is.

2024-08-13 21:16:33 +0000 UTCWe have this from Book One: > That the Republics might not endorse [the Yellow Earth’s] actions but equally refused to denounce them was one of the reasons Tianxia was so often at war with its neighbours. It’s also come up that there are a lot of Yellow Earth members in the Ministry of Rites, and that the Yellow Earth has tried and failed to get certain books banned in various Republics.

2024-08-11 18:26:51 +0000 UTCHave we learned any details on the relationship between Tianxi government and the Yellow Earth? I wonder how much they are intelligence agency and how much quasi-religious sect.

2024-08-11 18:23:49 +0000 UTCNah, think about how much Song has talked about filial piety and duty. This has all the makings of a tragedy. Song will offer him the option, but he won't take it. He's going to be unable to let go, and thus be a foil to Song while reinforcing the theme of letting the past go. All of the characters have been set up to make that decision, and most of them are hurting people around them because they can't do it yet.

2024-08-11 14:08:10 +0000 UTCIt would be so funny if all of these treason plots screw over one another, leaving Evander on the throne with a shocked pikachu face~

2024-08-10 02:42:21 +0000 UTCI had the same hope, but what this chapter seemed to make clear to me was that while we the readers saw it as likely more than a simple parasite, Maryam was not able to look at it that way until just now.
Rune of Doom
2024-08-10 02:21:19 +0000 UTCLooking back, the warehouse the Yellow Earth pointed our gang at was owned by the Anaidons, and Song described that as a pretty clear attempt to distract from the tianxi assassin. This mostly makes me distrust the contract initials entirely.

2024-08-09 22:28:04 +0000 UTCI’m really hoping this is an E.E. special and the name of the leader of one of the coup attempts is a pseudonym used by the current Rector.

2024-08-09 22:11:43 +0000 UTCI think the only H.A. we've met so far is Hector Anaidon, with the boon of health, in Song's first sniffer session. Doesn't match the idea of the nobles VS the merchants though, unless there's a deeper level. A is also Arkol and Anastos of course, with Anastos being the most likely.

2024-08-09 13:26:21 +0000 UTCVery nice position the Watch is about to find themselves in here... set the merchants against the noble coup to save Palliades, set Palliades against the tianxi because they're backing the merchants, Palliades falls in line for the blackcloaks, so they can use the shipyard to get at the god behind the noble coup... it still remains to figure out how our set of gods (odyssean, oduromai, the hated one, and the golden ram) have juggled their various masks, but I bet that will also reveal the assassin, which'll tie things back to the 19th and the ivory library. I would actually bet the 13th only gets *one* new member in this book, which bodes poorly for poor Evander as Izel's star rises, but none of the above loop indicates what Locke and Key have been doing for him, so! He has his own treasons to be going about.

Oliver Schell
2024-08-09 12:09:15 +0000 UTCTwo things can be true though, he can live to fight another day. Narratively song's problem with him is that he can't possibly be a good man because there are no good kings... Unless he were to voluntarily give up his kingdom for some reason. The shape of it fits in the story.

2024-08-09 12:07:52 +0000 UTCMy dear friends, I have a confession to make. Some creative reframing of the truth may have taken place during the planning of this coup against House Palliades...

2024-08-09 10:38:36 +0000 UTCSee thats why I hoped Maryam would be more careful and less ornery towards her shade. For one, an unknowable amount of precious knowledge would be lost if she continues to devour it as is. And also it’s been heavily hinted that it’s not a simple parasite, especially when Locke said something about that it’s been a while since he saw someone argue with *herself* so fiercely… Well I hope that she’ll be more careful after this.
Ryu
2024-08-09 08:47:24 +0000 UTCPalliades leaving Asphodel and taking the black would be a reach imo. It would be like if Song were to renounce her name and identity as a Ren and just move on to live a decent life working as a sniffer when it becomes impossible to bear. He has his own battles to fight and his own ambitions to achieve, I think him abandoning them just like that would be too… shallow. But you never know for sure with EE I guess, so imma just trust him to cook

2024-08-09 06:18:33 +0000 UTC*snorts cocaine* Alright so it all goes to shit, Evander is due to be killed by his many enemies but Song saves his life...by convincing him to renounce his titles and take the black as a member of the 13th. Song saves his life and kills their romance in the same instant as she is too much the consummate professional to consummate a relationship with a subordinate. The 13th goes up to 5/6 members teased in the totally canon banner art and gains a skilled diplomat in the process. They escape on the skimmer and instead of returning to Scholomance they're emergency reassigned to some other task out in Vesper. Because really I love Scholomance but narratively I doubt they're going back for long, if at all.

2024-08-09 05:49:17 +0000 UTCWe have Malan and the ministers looking to set up shop and destroy the workshop. We have Yellow Earth and the subtle support of Tianxia looking to become a naval superpower. We have the Grasshopper King’s quiet approval for the Obsidian Order to try and kill Evander. Even more fun, we have a bleeding God, a rampaging God, and an assassin God all working to unknown ends. This is gonna be the shitshow of shitshows
