Many of the cables you saw going to homes were for cable TV, now obsolete and waiting for the cables to be removed. Did you try wiring up an ausie plug they are a really crap design, I have been in Sydney since 2012, and I still use UK power boards for my vintage UK Hi Fi equipment. I rent a house with older wiring, uses wire fuses on the distribution board, and NO RCD protection, I wish I'd known you were in Sydney so I could have shown you how bad home circuits are, and I could have shown you the dousing experiment that I saw on the BBC's Tomorrows world in the 70s For the bat segment you should have gone with The Birthday Party - Release the Bats
