When you're in orbit, you're already in space, or you would fall eventually due to speed loss. So I don't get the message about the ball thrown towards the Earth. Plus, if you want to travel outside Earth's attraction from the orbit, throwing stuff directly towards the Earth is a bad idea. Better throw something to speed you up tangentially.
