Added 2021-04-01 00:52:47 +0000 UTCWhen I decided on today's pick, I didn't realize that it's only available in Nevada & California. Frey Ranch Straight Bourbon Whiskey is made in Fallon, Nevada, which is way north of Las Vegas, east of Reno, the state capital. The family has had their farm for over 165 years and their whiskey is made with only 10 percent of their crops, the rest mostly sent to the dairy farm next door to feed the cattle.
I saw it advertised at our local ski slope and one other place in town, and felt it was necessary to support my own state's distillery! Whiskey is becoming just like heels and stockings. You can never collect too many 😚.
At first taste, it was a bit rough to start, but after a few sips, it grew on me more and more. It has a bit of a bite, but tasty all the same. I would say this isn't a great bourbon or a terrible one, but somewhere in the middle. I probably would add a bit of ice or use it in cocktails. On a side note, the cork is very cool. It's heavy and the design is raised, almost like a cattle brand. Cheers! 🥃
Notes from Whiskey Consensus:
Nose: Dried cherries, caramel, egg custard, nutmeg, cinnamon, honey butter, and plenty of heat.
Taste: Cherry Dr. Pepper, bitter dark chocolate, mocha, chocolate torte, and a touch of maple syrup.
Finish: Hershey’s chocolate, peanuts, and lingering layers of dried cherries, cinnamon, and oak. Slightly drying and very long with beautiful layers of flavor.
