So funny story: In a making-of special on the DVD release of the show, the black turtles were revealed to actually be a last-minute addition because the writers weren't sure what to have the dog in episode 1 cough up to return to normal (they knew they wanted it to be SOMETHING black and gross-looking, but they weren't sure until someone suggested a small, black turtle). This of course led to "okay well the audience is gonna wanna know what's up with the random turtle beyond it being a canine choking hazard, so what are we gonna do?" Their solution? To pepper in black turtles here and there and EVERYWHERE throughout the world of The Unknown, and when asked by viewers, simply say the turtles are "a loose thread in the quilt" (referencing how the turtles didn't "seamlessly" fit into the plot). An important thing to remember about Over The Garden Wall is that, as fantastical and fairytale-esque the show can get, there is ONE thing that is VERY realistic about it, that one might even say is a good lesson (if any) to take away from it: You won't get ALL the answers you want before your time to leave this world comes... and that's okay. Sometimes, you will catch a glimpse of something that catches you off-guard and defies any explanation you might try to come up with, and you'll have to simply... *accept* that you probably won't ever get to know the answer. Maybe someone somewhere understands it, but it won't hurt you to not be the one to know. ... oooor maybe I'm just reading too far into it. I love this show with all my heart, and I'm glad to see there's still folks all these years later experiencing it for the first time. Have a great Spooky Month!

The babes in the wood episode is probably one of my least favorite just because I dont care for the old timey cartoon part, but the rest of it is still so good. And this show just perplexes me every time I watch it. I never know what to make of it. Its unsettling and so fascinating. So glad you enjoyed (?) these episodes. Can't wait for the next one.
