WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE SPHERE OF SELENE DOESN'T BELONG TO SELENE?!?!

"The Spear of Selene!"~Ducktales S1 Ep12 FULL Reaction

This one always gets me emotional. Between Donald being upset over the loss of Della, Dewey struggling with what she might have done, and Webby acquiescing her need for answers for Dewey's sake, it's rough. And the hug at the end is cute. To be fair, most mythologies are filled with gods that are petty little bitches. Compared to his actual portrayal, this actually makes Zeus look... good? This episode launched a couple ships among the fandom. Webby & Dewey, likely due to all their contact in this episode. A popular headcanon is Donald & Storkules. As well, some speculate Della & Selene might have been a thing. It's always fascinating to see the shipping fandom fighting for crumbs. All three are viable, but I have other thoughts / evidence about Dewey and Webby separately, but you'll get there.

Whenever this show seems to give you an answer, they tear it all away and leave you with only more questions. It only gets worse from here lol.

This is one of my favorite episodes in large part because it's the first one that really packs a significant emotional punch. The Great Dime Chase was more focused on setting up the mystery and developing the plot, so it wasn't as prominent there, but this one is all about the emotional impact of Della's absence.

"Fun" fact: some of the writers initially pushed for Zeus to be a swan in this show. That one didn't even reach the Disney censors before the other staff shot it down on the basis that referencing the rape of Leda in their children's cartoon was maybe not the best idea. Despite cutting that part, this is generally the most true to mythology portrayal of Zeus Disney's ever made. The Greek gods are petty thin-skinned tyrants, and Zeus is the worst of the lot. They probably went with Selene as their moon goddess of choice instead of the more familiar Artemis because Selene is one of the least murderous Greek gods. As far as I can tell, there's only one story of Selene smiting a lesser being for some minor slight, and even that is portrayed as mostly unintentional, while Artemis has a whole section of her Wikipedia page titled "Divine Retribution." This episode doesn't directly answer many questions about Della's fate (and when it initially released, a lot of people had basically the same reaction to that as you did), but that's not really the point of the episode. It's more focused on character than plot progression- Dewey's idolization of his mother and fear that she might not live up to his image of her, Webby's treatment of the whole thing more as a fun mystery to solve and her realization of how much more personally important this is to Dewey, Donald's association of adventure with Della's fate, and getting some information about Della's personality from Storkules and Selene's comments. All that being said, the episode DOES actually provide a couple crucial pieces of information toward solving the mystery: obviously, the fact that the Spear of Selene isn't a literal spear owned by Selene, but something else named for her, but also that information about Della's personality- Storkules describes her as "fiery" and "fierce" and believes Della would be upset about her family retiring from adventure and disagree strongly with Donald's belief that it's not worth the risk, and Selene both believes that a fake prophecy about a cursed treasure would be effective bait to pull a prank on Della and that she'd appreciate such a prank.

“How many b*tches are named Selene?” I’m dead. Thou hast slain me.

You know what? I never thought about it, but Donald giving up adventuring for the boy's sake makes sense - I always just assumed he gave it up because of Della's disappearance and the rift that caused between him and Scrooge.
