"Mermen"~ Our Flag Means Death S2 Ep8 FULL Reaction

Comments

Thank you so much for deciding to react to OFMD - I subscribed just to watch your full reactions to these, and they've been so fun and satisfying to watch. I imagine you must get a bit of the same satisfaction when you rewatch these with your mum! For balance in this comment section, I'm gonna say that I loved series two even more than series one for all the places it took Ed and Stede in particular, and those dark episodes are ones I go back to quite often because of that. But this hard comedy/drama blend is my absolute sweet spot for what I enjoy generally, so that tone shift worked for me. And, for me, I find series one *more* satisfying with a new perspective on where it sits in the full story sweep for these characters. But each to our own! OFMD stands up so well to a rewatch, and if you ever have the stamina for it, the quality of tumblr meta is amazing and has only made me love the show more. There's so much to find in this show in terms of imagery, visual and story parallels, depth of character development. There's so much going on in these scripts for just 30 minutes a go. Sending love for your recovery from this episode!

I saw Izzy’s death coming since ep. 110 (when Izzy let’s his mask slip for the fraction of a second), and considered it confirmed after he was ‘killed’ in Stede’s dream in ep. 201 — and I still BAWLED my eyes out for DAYS. It is so incredibly well-acted by both Con O’Neil and Taika Waititi– and even just watching it like this again, I have a knot in my stomach and am tearing up. PLEASE keep in mind that this show was *always* supposed to have three seasons and that Izzy/Con was *always* supposed to be a stable in all three seasons — there is more story still to be told about his character. So as devastating as his death was (and,at least to me, also incredibly beautifully acted out + shout out to the makeup department), this was never supposed to be the end-end. Whether he’d come back to life (I doubt it, but would never rule it out) or appear as a ghost/confidant + flashbacks to the time before Stede appeared in his and Ed’s lives, Izzy was (and as far as I know IS) always meant to be part of s3 as well. So let’s hope Netflix gives us that damn third season! 🔥💜💜💜🥹

Honestly what the writers did was the worst trope ever and that is redeeming a character that has gone through hell only to kill said character for shock factor I hate how they killed him. The show lost me in session two as well and when I rewatched the first session it was like a whole different show, session two feels like a fanfic ngl.

Okay, so... This finale is the main reason why I didn't want to comment on S2 at all until you watched it, because I knew I couldn't really talk about it without giving something away. As someone who watched S1 as it was coming out and was HUGELY hyperfixated on this fandom until the end of S2, I've never been so disappointed by a piece of media before. When I realized Izzy was going to actually die and not just pull through like everyone else did when shot/stabbed/etc. in this show (especially in the left side which was in s2 kinda established as not fatal), I felt the hyperfixation and fandom interest slowly fade out of me. I've honestly never felt anything like that before, and it really sucked. I know it sounds super dramatic but this finale ruined the whole show for me and I can't really enjoy any of the fandom in the same way after seeing it. I'm not against character death in media I enjoy, far from it. But the way they established the mood of this series as a comedy, and then spent a huge part of S2 on building Izzy's character growth, including him losing his leg in a traumatic way and wanting to die and then being kinda okay, they just killed him off by a character like Rick? In a weird scenario where it would make zero sense for Izzy, the only person with a highly visible WOODEN LEG, to escort their hostage? And he said he wanted to go?? It just made absolutely no sense to me. And we got almost zero reaction from anyone else apart from Ed. Apart from that, there were some iffy bits in S2 that I wasn't a huge fan of, such as the whole "Izzy is in an abusive relationship with Blackbeard" thing that never felt fully resolved after Ed came back, the way they handled Izzy's disability in general, Jim and Oluwande not being together anymore (although I love that they're still good friends, that's rare in media), the scenes with Lucius talking about his trauma which was handled especially poorly... All in all, I just felt like they had something really great with this cast and S1, but they ruined it with bad writing. IMO they could've cut out some things, instead of rushing it with limited number of episodesa and fumbling the whole thing. Sorry for the rant. Anyway, Calypso's Birthday remains my favourite of this season, and I'll forever be grateful for this show for introducing me to Con O'Neill (Izzy). I really enjoyed watching you react to it! 💜

The writer of OFMD planned the show to have 3 seasons, but with all the shows getting cancelled right now regardless of how well written and how well they seem to do, decided to end the season in a way that gave us some type of closure (the crew all coming together for a wedding and to set off on another adventure) and Ed and Stede in a good place (finally retiring Blackbeard and opening their inn). The creator of the show is very vocal on trying to get the final season picked up and there is a Twitter account called adoptourcrew who are organizing movements to try to get it picked up as well. Hopefully we will finally get our third season, but until then, we have fanfic :)

Izzy's death will always upset me, but I'm glad Ed and Stede stayed behind to stay with him. I highly doubt they'll be great innkeepers, but hopefully season 3 will come eventually and we'll see!

Remember Stede killed Izzy in the dream sequence in episode 1. It's crazy how we all went from cheering for his death to crying over it in 8 episodes.

Let me assure you that I cried for 1 Week every time I thought about that ending. It's beautiful and cruel at the same time :D

Aieee, I knew Izzy's death would hurt, because he was growing on you over this whole season. I felt your pain. Let's hold out hope for a Season 3 somehow, by a miracle, it could happen.
