It’s already February, but of course, we still believe that 2025 has only just begun.😂
In early February, there’s a Japanese tradition called Setsubun. It involves scattering dried soybeans around the house to drive away demons.
By the way, “👹” represents an oni—a devil-like being from ancient Japanese folklore. The idea is to throw beans at it to drive it away.
When I was a child, my parents and teachers would sometimes wear demon masks, and we kids would throw beans at them.
People say the “demons” represent illnesses and misfortunes that often occur during seasonal changes, and I’ve certainly noticed a lot of people around me getting sick. Please take care of yourselves!
By the way, separate from throwing beans, there’s also a custom of eating a number of beans equal to one’s age. It’s said to originate from ancient Japanese beliefs, but once you reach our age, eating that many beans can be quite a challenge!
Personally, I’d rather eat the “beans” of one—or maybe two—of our heroines instead!
