When it comes to Japanese entertainment that has gained global recognition, video games, anime, and manga are famous examples. However, Japan also boasts many forms of entertainment that have developed solely within the country. One of these is manzai.
Manzai is a traditional Japanese comedy style, performed primarily by a duo engaging in a dialogue-based act. Typically, the roles are divided into the boke (the fool) and the tsukkomi (the straight man). The boke makes silly remarks or deliberate mistakes, while the tsukkomi immediately points them out with sharp, witty retorts to elicit laughter.
Of course, this is the standard style, and there are many acts that don't adhere to these conventions. The hallmark of manzai lies in its fast-paced dialogue, skits, wordplay, cultural references, and everyday themes.
The Japanese love watching manzai, and nowadays, there are numerous competitions where manzai comedians, known as manzaishi, compete to showcase their comedic skills. Watching these competitions has almost become a national pastime.
In the largest manzai competition, the M-1 Grand Prix, over 10,000 duos entered this year. Just recently, 30 teams advanced to the semifinals. The finals will take place at the end of this month.
Since the outcome of this competition can have a huge impact on the contestants' lives, it's nerve-wracking to watch. At the same time, as someone in the entertainment industry myself, I can't help but feel relieved that I don’t have to compete like they do!
