One of the biggest reasons why Azula and Zuko are so strong is because of their ancestors. Having both Sozin's and Roku's genes created a pair of seriously powerful firebenders. They were literally bred to be elite on purpose.

I just assumed he died at a later time, but he protected Roku as best he could and went out with him. Remember, Roku was married. He had a child or children. One of them got married and had a daughter (Zuko's mother) and she married Fire Lord Ozo, at that time he was just a prince, and second in line.
