AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER 3x5 - FULL Reaction

Comments

I love a good fish-out-of-water story. Sometimes you forget that these kids are literally children--Azula is what, 14? 15? but then you see them have problems interacting with other kids and it brings it right home how young and silly and confused they all are. It's also good to remember, I think, that bullies only rarely form out of nowhere. Every bad guy has an origin story, but like Zuko's story, it's one made up of choices that add up. Azula's choices are radically different from her brother's, but she's also coming from a place of considerably less love to combat all that rage and isolation and cruelty that her father foisted on her. The villains in this show are so well written, and it really brings home to those of us who want to be good people that sometimes we just got lucky enough to have people/circumstances that empowered us to make better choices.

Uh yes, thank you for pointing that out. I am aware πŸ˜…

I think "Azula is so evil sometimes" is an understatement. This one moment in this one episode is the only time what she says and does is not manipulative, transactional, or to further her own objective.

Travis Stoll

I always love how Zuko makes that break through with his reality not matching his expectations about feeling more complete if he gets his father's recognition and approval; recognizing that his anger is wi himself- like he's disappointed and he's right on the cusp of understanding in what ways he let himself down.

I actually really like this episode cause of this development of the villains. Azula actually showing emotions here adds this new dimension to her. One example is her bringing Zuko down to the beach. There was no real manipulation in her doing that. She did it because she actually felt some form of sympathy for Zuko. Saying that house was depressing, means those memories affect her in some way as well. Azula is so evil sometimes, but its really cool they show a new part of her, when she's not in battle, just relaxing at home around her friends.

I really love how this episode finally humanizes these villains we have come to hate (or love, depending on who you are lol) so much. the best shows/movies always do it so that it's easy to root for em. still not rooting for azula tho πŸ˜‚
