The book explains that most Japanese had never been on a ship and feared open water so he had never seen anyone dive into the water and swim it was mostly fisherman. So he learned to swim amd then demanded his men to learn how amd actually used it for execise.exercise. also he had been refusing to bathe so that's one reason he wanted to tire him out before the race and he wanted to learn something from his culture not just use him for his gain
