Since Obi-Wan had his own fling with another character (don't want to spoil the name), he understood Anakin's feelings. They go over this later on in the show and in a comic.

And to be perfectly honest is, in my opinion, one of the biggest problems of the Jedi Order. Also keep in mind Palpatine is not only the secret mastermind behind the Separatist movement as Darth Sidious but he's also the most powerful Sith Lord in the galaxy. His powers are so strong he's able to hide his power from even the strongest Jedi like Yoda who live in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant right near the Galactic Senate. Normally Jedi and Sith can sense other force wielders but Palpatine disguised himself not only as the Chancellor of the Senate but also disguised his powers. As evil as he is, Palpatine is also one of the most cunning and patient villains of all time.
