I don't know what the situation is with the younger person you mention later in the discussion, but it reminds me of this. I have younger family members and people I work with, and the way I'm able to *really listen* to their perspectives and struggles (and how I enjoy doing so) can seem to break the ice on them interacting more wholeheartedly with people older than them. Every adult can seem a disciplinarian or scold at a certain age, and so older teens kinda clam up as a result, become sullen and uncommunicative. It can take a bit to get them to realize you're actually listening to them and aren't gonna get on their case about anything, but once you do I think they can start to really open up more with lots of older people in their lives that can teach them a ton, way more than you individually can. It's really fun seeing how they can take off as a result.
