Logically, perhaps the earliest draft of the story had the tailors telling the Emperor that the stupid and ill-suited would be unable to appreciate the material's beauty due to their lack of a refined, educated viewpoint. Yes: even Hans Christian Andersen liked to make fun of hipsters.
