i mean i guess that makes sense as a possibility. my thought process still makes more sense to me but i guess that is more because i came up with it on my own and i will always prefer my own thoughts over someone else's when they are equally able to be true.

No, I think it definitely was the wand. He reaches for her and then realizes that she fell asleep clutching the wand. She obviously values the gift he gave her, she didn't set it aside. That makes him feel guilty for thinking about taking advantage of her, so he backs off. He just mentions the ring because it was appropriate for the moment, although yea, anything involving Paul would have been bad.

Rudeus and Eris' relationship is honestly my favorite thing about this series.

so i didn't even notice the wand there so guess to some extent they could have been hinting at those items being a sign for him to remember that he respects her as a student and all that but i don't think they were really focusing on the wand enough for that to be the main reason he backs off. who knows. Any way my interpretation of what he was saying was that he didn't want to be a repeat of whatever his father might have done. he has seen first hand how much of an ass hole Paul can be at times and with that ring now being associated with Paul in his mind it was a sort of warning signal in his brain like oh that is the sort of thing Paul would have done and i don't exactly like that. He has after all expressed discomfort with his father's manner of conducting himself in the past and literally in the scene right before he stopped gilain from telling a story just because she said Paul's name and he therefore knew it was gonna be bad.

This has taken priority over Made in Abyss. That says a lot about how much i like Mushoku and this beautiful man reacting to it.

It's that time in a MT reaction again, time for me to pull out the ole 7-day time machine again.
