The Father (2020) amazing movie with Anthony Hopkins greatest performance ever in my opinion. He won the Oscar for it this year.

1) "Places In The Heart" (1984) - stars Sally Field, Danny Glover, and John Malkovitch. Set in a small Texan town during the mid-1930's during the heart of the Great Depression. Sally Field is a mother whose sheriff husband was accidentally killed & has to figure out not only how to take care of her family (and grieve), but how to pay the bank what is owed so she doesn't lose her house and kids. I don't want to spoil too much, but Danny Glover plays a black itinerant whose knowledge helps SF. John Malkovitch plays the banker's brother-in-law, blinded in The Great War, forced into being SF's boarder. It's a great example of storytelling with superb acting, showing what life was like (both the good & bad). How helpful and valuable acceptance and kindness can be, when you focus on what really matters & is valuable. The 'found family' is my favorite part, aside from the ending (an example of what should be and the most beautiful and bittersweet scene I've seen in a while). 2) "Captain Blood" (1935) - has Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, Ross Alexander, Claude Raines, Basil Rathbone... the list goes on. The film that made Errol Flynn a star. Based on the Rafael Sabatini novel, it follows Dr. Peter Blood (Flynn) who gets arrested while tending to his friend. Who was injured in the famed 1619 Monmouth Rebellion against King James. He & others get 'rescued' from death by being sold into slavery. The film follows the efforts to break free & take care of themselves. Olivia de Havilland plays Arabella Bishop, the well-meaning but very spoiled daughter of Col. Bishop who is the plantation slave owner. A lot of the side characters steal the show, especially Ross Alexander as Jeremy Pitt. It's focus is white slavery, but there are a lot of black townsfolk (& one boy as the Governer's aide). I HIGHLY recommend this. It's a fantastic movie! 3) "Inherit the Wind" (1960) - Spencer Tracy, Frederick March, Gene Kelly. This is the film adaption of the famous play, which is in itself based on the real-life1920's case on teaching Darwin's Theory of Evolution in schools. Which made history. The film is again superbly acted, showing how religion & science are not necessarily mutually exclusive. The dangers of moralistic preaching (literally or through 'I'm so progressive/liberal, and you're so 'backward' in small towns"), as well the dangers of conflating attention with 'saving values' are deftly examined. How to recognize and value progress, without disregarding the value of old-fashioned beliefs or those of religion. One of my favorite films that really make you engage & think - timeless classic that can apply to life regardless of when or where you watch it. 4) "Any Day Now" (2012) - a hidden gem, one to make you root for the main characters, cry, and never forget it once you've seen it. Set in 1979 & based on a true story, it focuses on two interconnected lives. The film stars an amazing performance by Isaac Levin (the innocent heart) who is Marco, an autistic teen being raised by a single mother who (sadly) is drug-addicted. Their neighbor is the passionate Rudy (a heart-rending epic Alan Cumming) who is a gay man making a living as a drag queen entertainer. When the mom leaves the kid alone & doesn't return, Rudy turns to Paul (his new & closeted flame), a lawyer - who finds the mom's been arrested. They strike a deal where Rudy will take care of Marco while the mom's in jail. The film deals with them making a family, the homophobia (Rudy is Paul's 'cousin' b/c otherwise the adoption wouldn't be approved), the disability issues (how Marco is viewed due to the autism), and even a sympathetic few scenes on drug addiction (you may mean well, but...), job issues (jealousy & homophobia), and the impact of choices and actions. I'm actually going to include a link to the trailer for this one as it really pulls you in. "Any Day Now" (2012) Trailer Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ghwGOuuNy0 And Finally *drumroll* we have: 5) "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" (1984) --- the classic Miyazaki film that actually led to the creation of Studio Ghibli. And is one of the perfect films to watch, both in general and considering everything going on. It's set in a future where nuclear damage has turned most of the world toxic. Most of the humans live in small pockets set by this forest where the lingering ecological damage has it produce toxic deadly spores. It's inhabited by giant prehistoric insect creatures who are gentle unless you try to attack them & destroy their home. Their home is the toxic forest & wasteland, which is expanding and threatening the few humans left. Everyone wears masks to survive and Nausicaa is a kind princess and scientist who tries to help her people and loves to explore the world around her. Managing to defend those she cares about in non-violent ways, and having scientific exploration that's non-invasive or destructive. The only issue is those in power who have split into two warring kingdoms trying to get access to limited resources. Nuclear resources so they can try & destroy the toxic forest. That's all I'm saying - but it is epic, it is stunningly beautiful animation, it is a thoughtful and amazing story with incredible characters. And honestly, it's the perfect film to watch in 2021.

Narnia 3 would be good. It's disappointing when they start a film series and don't complete it eh? The only exception would be the Highlander film series if they ever get round to it. No 2 was terrible lol.

I've never actually seen "Passengers", but Metacritic rated it higher by 11%; I consider them a more accurate way to gauge Critical "enjoyment" given their Rating System. Having said that, it's not by much, still.

Darius.

I’m not gonna lie. After “Gattaca” got its butt handed to it by “Space Jam” in the last (ironically named) Underdog poll, it feels a bit futile to keep making suggestions. But here goes… GATTACA (1997): Yes, I’m a glutton for punishment. Not only do I think the ladies would enjoy this thoughtful, beautiful sci-fi movie, but I bet a lot of people who aren’t familiar with it (and thus, would never vote for it) would enjoy it too. Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman, Jude Law. A “near future” world really distinguishes itself with a haunting score and minimalist, noir aesthetic. THE OTHERS (2001): While this is technically “horror,” it’s a classy kind of horror - beautifully scripted, shot and acted, with elements of period drama and mystery. Nicole Kidman stars as a harried mother trying to look after her children in a lonely mansion on the British Isles while her husband fights in WWII. Even if you can anticipate some of the plot developments, there’s still so much to admire here. PASSENGERS (2016): Confession time. I'm apparently the only person in the world who likes this movie. I saw it twice in the theater before I looked up the Rotten Tomatoes score and discovered it had been rejected by critics and audiences alike. However, I'm suggesting it because I actually think the ladies would enjoy it too. (The cast alone would probably appeal to them.)

I would love for you guys to watch the Incredible Hulk(2008) since it’s the only MCU movie you guys haven’t seen yet. I also really recommend the Sony Marvel movies, Venom and The Amazing Spider-Man 1 and 2.

[**THIS IS A RE-POST**] -- with 1 added Movie: "Sunshine" (2007) Directed by Danny Boyle, Written by Alex Garland: Sunshine is a Science Fiction Thriller. Boyle has also Directed, "28 Days Later" (2002) & "Slumdog Millionaire" (2008). Fun Fact: During the process of Production, the Actors had to live together in order to create a believable onscreen experience that they knew each other. "Inside Man" (2006) Directed by Spike Lee, Written by Russell Gewirtz: Inside Man is a Mystery Crime Drama. Lee has also Directed Movies like, "Malcolm X" (1992) & "Do the Right Thing" (1989). Fun Fact: Apparently, Lee met William Dafoe in the restroom when they both attended the same Play, 'Julius Caesar', that ironically, Denzel Washington starred in. Spike said: "We should work together" and Dafoe replied: "Yeah, Spike, we should". After that, Spike sent him the script. "Underworld" (2003) Directed by Len Wiseman, Written by Kevin Grevioux/Danny McBride & Len Wiseman: According to IMDb, Underworld is an Action Fantasy Thriller, I can't say for certain whether I agree with their placement in Genre; it's more likely this Movie is a contemporary, highly stylized 'Gothic Noir'. Still, I'd even accept Science Fiction Horror. Fun Fact: One of the Writers, Grevioux, who also plays 'Raze' in the Movie, has an incredibly deep voice; believe it or not, it's actually his natural speaking voice & was never altered during Production. "Attack the Block" (2011) Written & Directed by Joe Cornish: Attack the Block is a Science Fiction Thriller. Cornish also Directed "The Kid Who Would Be King" (2019), and helped Write Movies like, "Ant-Man" (2015) & "The Adventures of Tintin" (2011). Fun Fact: While Cornish was researching, he asked diverse groups of kids what kind of weapons they'd use, if an invasion were to happen. Many of the talks went straight into the Movie. "The Greatest Game Ever Played" (2005) Directed by Bill Paxton, Written by Mark Frost [based on their Novel of the same name]: The Greatest Game Ever Played is a Biography [Biopic] Sports Drama. Paxton is more influential as an Actor than a Director; he's starred in many Movies like, "Aliens" (1986), "Apollo 13" (1995), "Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams" (2002), "Thunderbirds" (2004), "Edge of Tomorrow" (2014), "Titanic" (1997) & "Twister" (1996). Fun Fact: The Production Crew shot on-location at a real Golf Club outside Montreal, Quebec. They had a white Clubhouse painted yellow for the Movie; the folks over there liked it so much, they kept it after they were done. "Trouble with the Curve" (2012) Directed by Robert Lorenz, Written by Randy Brown: Trouble with the Curve is a Sports Drama. This is Lorenz's Directorial Debut and has worked on Movies like "Million Dollar Baby" (2004), which ironically, is Directed by Clint Eastwood who stars in this Movie. Fun Fact: Through the persistent efforts of the Crew, they got Eastwood to come out of Acting retirement to be in this Movie. Before this, he was in "Gran Torino" (2008), which he also Directed. Obviously this changed once he did "The Mule" (2018).
