I do think Jack's too controlling, although when it comes to Kate it comes out of an unreasonable desire to keep her out of harms way, despite how capable she is, but as far as fighting and guns go he for the more part knows what he's doing. Last time he exhausted himself trying to find Charlie and Claire, putting so much pressure on himself to find them, plus had just fallen down a hill so I think that's why he got his ass beat.

Just came here to point out Jack's controlling behaviour towards Kate. While Sawyer treats her like an equal. (real talk -- Jack should stay behind and Kate go, since Jack has no idea what he's doing and got his ass beat last time)

One thing that supports this is the amount of broken bones. You couldn't break that many bones in the morning without being seen

Rogue Maverick

In regards to Tom's Vincent theory, remember that Vincent had been missing since he ran off before the polar bear came upon Walt. I find it highly more likely that Vincent simply finally came "home", set off one of the dropping metal can alarm near Boone and waking him up rather than Ethan purposely finding and catching Vincent, setting him loose to trigger the alarm to wake Boone up as a distraction and murder Scott. Since Ethan came from the water, and didn't have to worry about breaking their perimeter of people with sharp sticks, he would have much higher success of stealthily murdering Scott during the dark night resulting in a woman discovering the body in the morning, rather than having only a few minutes in the morning to kill him while everyone was distracted by Vincent.
