2018-06-19 12:55:11 +0000 UTCI rather like the Hobbit movies and I’m glad you all seem to be liking it as well. However, a lot of people who are fans of LOTR and basically every Tolkienite seems to hate these films. I don’t want to cast a downer on this, but I found this three part video essay thing by a Youtuber named Lindsay Ellis rather interesting. I wanted to share it with you as it gives some interesting insight into why these films don’t seem to reach the calibre of LOTR. The first part deals with how the films kind of slip in quality control compared to LOTR, the second part deals with what good the films have done for New Zealand and the pride New Zealanders have to be able to have Middle Earth be New Zealand, and the third part (the part I found most interesting) has to do with the unethical way these films came into being. Anyway, I hope you might give the video essays a chance though, of course, you are obviously not obligated to in any way. Unfortunately, it is still illegal and I definitely can be sued for abusing copyright if found out. As much as I would love to use it (it would make editing so much easier).. I've done a lot of research on legality issues... and those who do get away with using it... only do so because they haven't been caught yet. Google even warns you that they can cancel your account if you use copyright material in this manner. Thanks so much again for helping our channel! I try to add elements to make viewing as easy as possible. Sorry for the extra step! Thanks again!

I try not to say much to Mom and Kim so they can develop their own opinion... but I was so close to telling them how fans are conflicted about TH and LotR... I do love both for similar and very different reasons. Great news is Mom and Kim really seem to be enjoying this series so much! So can't wait to watch more! Btw, I forgot to mention - don't worry about checking for your father during the reactions, if this is something that is needed. I know it distract you a little bit, but family comes first. I, for one, understand that perfectly, and personally I would rather have you reacting this way rather than wait for a more convenient time, since who knows when that may happen. So please don't worry. And if you need to take a little break from doing reactions sometimes - that's okay too.

I agree that The Hobbits films differ from LotR in many ways, mostly in tone, but also, LotR feels larger, more epic and more realistic. That being said, there is something about The Hobbit that I actually like more than LotR, and that's its characters. LoTR characters are amazing and I love them dearly, but... how should I say it? I think that sometimes they feel almost like hero archetypes of sorts, the ones you can find in great myths and old stories, whereas Bilbo and the dwarves feel more like real life people thrown into most fantastic of circumstances. Even Gandalf feels more approachable in the Hobbit somehow. Btw, I feel you sis, about Thorin. To this day, I've never been more attracted to a fictional character. Richard Armitage in Thorin's costume, hair and everything - gets me ever time ;) Though I love him for many, many reasons. He is such a noble, tragic fool (and I say the word "fool" with all the love). There are some great works of fan fiction that delve into exploring his character more, and I cry every time when reading those stories (because apparently, I'm both a nerd and a big sap). Speaking more about the dwarves. Idk how much you know about their relations to each other, but I thought I’d put it out there anyway. So, obviously, Kili and Fili are brothers. They are sons of Dis, who is Thorin’s sister, so that naturally makes them Thorin’s nephews. Thorin and Dis used to have a brother, Frerin, but he died during the battle of Azanulbizar (the very same one that they showed in part 1 of the first Hobbit, the one where Thorin’s grandfather, Thror, lost his life). Balin (the old, wise advisor with great white beard) and Dwalin (bald, tattooed warrior) are brothers too. They are sons of Fundin, also of Durin’s line, but they are further away from the succession of the throne. Fundin had a brother himself, Groin, a father of Oin (the one with the hearing trumpet) and Gloin (red-headed, Gimli’s father). So those two are also counted among Durin’s folk – same as Gimli! And same as Dain Ironfoot who shows in the third film. Now, from what I remember, Bofur (jokester with the funny hat) and Bombur (rotund food-lover) are brothers, and Bifur (the one with an axe in his head) is their cousin. Dori (white hair, elaborate braids), Nori (the thief, with star-shaped red hair), and Ori (the youngest one, without a mustache) are brothers too, but they might have different fathers.
