My favorite show is M*A*S*H, and they too liked the experimentation episodes, so I can get behind loving it with this show. They had the good noir/mafia theme, complete with the winks of the names of Margaret Astor and Greenstreet. Shame there were no Peter Lorre or Elisha Cook Jr characters as that would have been great. Loved Dominic Burgess as Greenstreet. He was perfect as Victor Buono in the Bette Davis and Joan Crawford miniseries years ago. Here he does very good work in the goofy stereotype as you describe. Share Jess not loving the overly flirting, though Sam did run with it well. And good note on the nice change of pace of the lady being interested in Sam rather than Dean. All these villains that would be more serious threats in other shows are fairly small potatoes and choir boys compared to what the boys normally deal with. You’d love to hear Crowley offer commentary. Father Lucca was a standout in this one. He is just such a light compared to the usual characters that the boys run into. You can see how he makes the impact on Dean. I like the exploration of how Dean knows that the big man upstairs didn’t leave the best impression, yet Father Lucca prays and believes. Dean has the first hand experience that it clashes with what he knows. Perhaps. But the man believes, admits that he knows that they’re not going to be blessed with the miracle, and still holds the faith. That’s a man to get behind. You do feel Sam’s burnout and desperation. Figured, by the way, that you’d comment about Sam again getting the thump over the head, and amusing that Dean lampshades that being a trend recently. Human history is already tough enough to get through and keep hope alive. Factor in what the boys have dealt with, and are still dealing with, Sam would be drowning in the darkness and despair. I’ve been there. So, it is nice that Dean is keeping hope alive. That is a great final moment.

One of the things I really enjoy about Supernatural, as a whole, is they aren't afraid to experiment with episodes. From Baby, to Fan Fiction, The French Mistake, Changing Channels, Bloodlines, Bitten... they like to change things up and try different things, even if they don't always work out as well as some of the others. But I really, really liked how they did this one.
It was a really cool twist on the whole noir-mafia theme, that tied in really well with the supernatural aspects. It had a very light, fun air to the whole concept, and I enjoyed that it took what, in other shows, would be intense, dark, scary characters- the murderous mafia boss, the greedy, eccentric millionaire, the femme fatale caught up in the whole mix of things who, surprise, was running things the entire time- and made them into almost goofy caricatures of their archetypes. The overly flirty woman (who, honestly, it was sort of refreshing to see go after Sam, and watch Sam be the one to flirt and charm with her, instead of Dean as it usually is), the greedy millionaire who is clearly in way over his head, and the mafia boss whose threat and scariness seems almost childishly put on. And the whole concept of sort of making these normally intimidating figures into something silly, and almost hilariously inept is actually brilliant with Sam and Dean. because they have faced soo much worse than these guys. They might be bad guys in the regular world, but to Sam and Dean, after leviathan and archangels, hell and demons, and angels and multiple apocalypses, these guys are laughable in comparison. They don't hold the same kind of threat, and the show shows us that. It makes it a really fun, kind of breather episode, especially in such a heavy, dark season for the boys.
At the same time, as Jess said, there are bright spots. Luca was incredible. With all the darkness in their lives, Scarpattio and his ilk are the kinds of humans they mostly interact with. They are used to evil, and greedy, and selfish, and just... bad people. They don't usually get to see someone good, and kind, and selfless. Someone doing good because its the right thing to do. He really is a bright spot that i think both boys need, and a reminder of what they are fighting for. I think his scenes with Dean in particular, who is notoriously the least faithful of the two brothers, hit really hard, in a way that adds to the levity of the episode, instead of detracting from it. Like we can see Dean feeling better, stronger, lighter, because of this man.
And then, of course, Supernatural has to gut punch us with that ending. Because Sam isn't feeling better. He didn't have those scenes with Luca, not really. Actually, he once again got hurt (literally bashed over the head) by someone who represents his faith. And you can see him struggling this episode so hard. Hating working for the greedy, or the selfish, hating the idea of these men getting ahead, or winning, again. He wants to see someone good get ahead. He needs it. He needs to see something good happen, because he is drowning in the dark and the bad. And Jared's performance in that final scene, the desperation for something to change, for all of their work to pay off, to finally (at least in his eyes) make a difference... honestly I teared up. Sam's raw pain, his exhaustion, was just phenomenally shown. And, Dean being the one to have the faith, to be the optimistic one, and to carry Sam right now... these brothers are just incredible this season

Just saw it for the first time myself late last night. Which is earlier than I usually try to catch these when sharing these shows with Jess. But the show leaves Netflix after tonight, and I’m still unclear as to where one can stream it after it leaves Netflix. I think I heard Peacock, which I don’t have. And since I knew what episode was next as hype and buzz for it was impossible to avoid even years ago, on the off chance that I wouldn’t be able to see it, I got the viewing in early to be safe. “Better to have and not need than need and not have.” as my grandma used to say. Whole thing was a hoot and a half, so yeah, looking forward to Jess reacting to it.
