There's a lot of deleted material from the script which I don't believe was ever filmed; purposefully, to keep it more of a mystery, which is what a ghost story should be. This is a tale of themes, and in the broader context *does* come together and make sense as a whole even if the individual moments don't; Ghost Light respects its audience's intelligence and deductive reasoning, knowing that most fans in 1989 would be recording it on video to watch later multiple times, and this figure out the lines to read between.
