Yeah, an effective bait-and-switch with Jack. Aided by the performance which felt like it was leaning more towards feeling like Sam Neill than Harvey Stephens. Er, adult Damien rather than Damien as a little boy, that is, where the former is more openly evil and aware of it where the latter, there is the ambiguity of how aware of anything he is. And on paper, the death of the guy doesn’t NOT look like something Jack could have done. Like how Dean admits that he’s not happy about how it looks, even says that he’s not pulling an “I told you so.”, and the good realistic touch of Sam remembers about the security guard, so his optimism can only go so far. Good work on the writers’ end. Makes for a good payoff when Jack reveals that he was trying to find Mary, and that he’s family. The line, “I am home.” had me joking, “And now he’s doing Sam Neill in Event Horizon.” albeit less creepily. Sweet moment, I just had a laugh at that part with the film springing to mind. Good words said about crossing lines. Can’t entirely fault Dean, and I feel more sad than angry or mad. You can tell Sam feels the same, hence why he never calls out Dean much on that one. Yeah, now you mention it, it is nice that Jody called Sam and inquired about how he is. Good godmother energy that Jody has. I know that Jody is perhaps not literally the boys’ godmother, but I dub her as such as the energy is very much godmother energy. Makes me miss my own godmother, my aunt. Sweet to see how she cares for the boys, and in this episode, as you say, she offers the good care and support.

Jack!!! my precious. He is so sweet, and so good.
I do love how this episode fakes us out, by setting up Jack and doing, honestly, a perfect frame job against him for what happened to Derek, and i feel like we all owe Jack apologies for it lol. Here he us just trying to help Mary, and his fathers, and we all think he is a murderer. Dang writers lol. That being said, it was a great bait and switch and i love what they are doing with the uncertainty of Jack, and the whole nature vs nuture argument they are doing with him.
I also really appreciated the theme of “crossing lines” in this episode… thinking that Jack is crossing lines with his plans, Dean coming so close with Kaia, with threatening her with a gun to try and save his mom… even the angels, in their attempts to get Jack. The parralels of what desperate people are willing to do for what they believe in, was just really well done.
I also have to say, I love Jody checking on the boys, asking Sam to call her back… and, specifically, i really really loved that it was Sam that she called. Almost everybody that the boys have in their lives usually go through Dean. They call him, talk to him first, deal with Dean primarily. And so far this season, everything really has revolved around Dean, in regards to the brothers so far. How Dean is doing, how Dean is coping, how Dean is acting with Jack.
I just really love that we got to see someone who loves the boys call Sam, worry about Sam, and want Sam to check in… Sam who also lost his mother, lost his friend, had to face his abuser and then raise his abusers child, while supporting his grieving, traumatized brother. I just adore that we got to see Sam have some of that care and support that he so freely gives to everyone around him, given back to him
