This one did feel comparatively lighthearted, more than the season so far. Great to see Jess really dig this one. Curious which episode Jess’s mom refers to. You say that those who’ve seen the season know the episode. I know of AN episode to come in this season, though I’ve yet to see it. Don’t know if that’s the precise episode being alluded to. Wouldn’t surprise me if it is, put it that way. Solid guest cast in this. Good casting of Richard Brake, who often plays villains, as Luther, making for the good reveal about him in the end. The brotherly banter was strong and relatable in this one. One comment I’d have added was with the Indiana Jones dart hallway, I would deadpan, “Take it that knowing about how in the Latin alphabet, Jehovah beginning with an I isn’t going to help in this situation?” Got mildly defensive of Dean expressing disgust toward Entrapment. Movie’s fun. Sure, for heist films, it’s not The Asphalt Jungle or Le Cercle Rouge, no, but it’s still great fun. I also do not bat an eye when Sam’s explanation for why he saw Entrapment is simply, “Catherine Zeta-Jones.” and Dean does start to have that, “All right, Sammy!” look on his face when he hears that. I love how with the final scene, I expected some surprise or sudden dramatic scene, and instead, it’s just the boys sharing a few cold ones. Yeah, Dean’s getting the optimism back, making Sam and Jess happy. And now you mention it, yeah, Sam does sort of slump a bit at the end. The whole weight of just trying to keep up the hope whilst going through it all is starting to weigh too heavily. You liken it to being depressed, struggling to keep the act up and keep the grind going. As someone who has gone through some pretty bad spells of rather severe depression, sometimes it gets bad enough that you lack all energy to even attempt the act whilst keeping the grind going. So, it means that Sam is still keeping his head above water, which is good. The whole thing is done in a very understated manner, as you said.

i really love this episode. After the very heavy beginning to this season, this really does feel like a breath of fresh air, a light hearted episode to let us just catch a beat, and relax for a moment, before we dive back into the plot and the darkness and heaviness. And seeing how much you adore this episode, I have to say I agree with your mom! You are going to just love The Episode of this season, because, yes, I think we all know which one it is (if you have seen this season already of course!). That being said, as much as I love the interactions of all the characters this episode, of Smash and Grab, Luther, Bart, and I loved the very brotherly behavior between Sam and Dean that we havent really seen in a while (the playful banter like in the scene where they talk about Entrapment, the way they tell each other to be careful by saying Don’t get Dead, the making plans and decisions together, as equals and communicating), honestly my favorite part of this whole episode is that final scene in the bunker. Yes, you can see Sam’s relief at Dean being Dean again- upbeat, focused, determined, head in the game. And it is genuine, and he is happy. But, there is a subtleness to Jared’s acting, and the writing, where you can feel the weight shifting. As Dean pulls himself out of the funk he was in, you can literally watch Sam sinking into it at the same time. And it is so phenomenally done because it isnt… dramatic. It isnt all at once, it isnt in your face or obvious. But all the episodes to now, slowly, piece by piece, we are watching Sam lose that spark, and its a very realistic performance of someone who is traumatized, and scared, and, honestly more than likely depressed, struggling to keep the act up and keep the grind going. And it isnt a big flashy thing, but i feel like that end scene, after such a light hearted, fun, heist episode, does a really good job at just… giving us a glimpse. Just a tiny reminder of where Sam’s head is at. And i really love that, from the writing to Jared’s acting choices, and Jensen playing off it… incredible.
