Like how they have Jack watching the old fantasy films so that he sits this one out to focus on the brothers. Sure hope that Sam doesn’t let Jack watch Legend as magnificent though Tim Curry as the big red guy is, probably not something that’d be good for Jack to watch right now. Sam screams little brother a lot, and I often feel it on the rather deeply personal level, though yeah, it is strong this week. Half expected a Mr. Mom reference when Sam offered the beer, with Dean noting, “It’s seven o’clock in the morning.” and you’d have Sam then reply, “...Scotch?” I also refute Dean saying that everyone loves chili fries. I don’t. Dean is in the bad way, and Sam is in pure little brother mode, as you describe. Trying to offer the stuff to cheer Dean up, even if Dean sees through it pretty quick. Not sure what it’d look like if it was me and my brother in Sam and Dean’s place as we largely hold the shared interests. Maybe something involving football? Sports shit? I don’t know. Whole thing is a nice bit of pureness, like you said. Not entirely sure it felt comedic, but it was nice. Well, the shot of Dean passed out did have the comedic vibe, with even the music having a sound of, “Oh, that Dean.” so I take your point. I did note that Sam should have made Dean chug orange juice, get some citrus and sugar in him to work on the leftover booze in the system before working on the coffee and bacon to soak up and absorb the booze/flush it out of the system. Makes me think too that they should have some bread in the Impala for the mornings after heavy drinking if either of them over do it in getting boiled and they can’t really stomach anything heavy. As to Dean, having gone through some pretty severe depression over the years, I get where he’s at some. Do understand the anger at him making Sam see his big brother die like this. Certainly share Jess having the response to the needles. We HATE that. Like you said, it almost feels cruel, yet you get where he’s coming from. It is one of the big things that helps stay one’s hand when the suicidal ideations get strong: what that will do to loved ones if you actually do it. This is Dean again doing what he can to save people yet has no more strength to keep fighting for himself. This is about as low a spot as when Bobby died as that was a huge blow for the boys losing their dad like that. Agree with the choices or not, the show does put you in the driver’s seat, so you feel it all, what Dean’s going through, yeah. Rather sad state of affairs when the talk with Billie is helpful. Find I’m critical of her as she still has the grudge against Dean, and I quote Michael Corleone, “Never hate your enemies, it affects your judgment.” She does make it clear that she can’t kill the boys much though she wants to, more so Dean, so that raises the stakes. Today is not the day for any of the deaths such as death by a red headed witch as that’s apparently a viable option. Hmm. You speak well that when he gets back, there is a bit of a spark that wasn’t there before. That is the big thing with severe depression: you honestly feel nothing or close to it. Feeling actual sadness ends up being such a relief as it’s something. You can see Dean going through that at the end. And he gets the reunion with Castiel, which I get annoyed that the credits told us that was coming. (Or at least you surmise that past a point.) I fairly often want to smack Dean, though yeah, this instance feels like smacking him is a valid response for what he put Sam through. As to Billie, I say Billie to distinguish between her and her predecessor. Said predecessor, I still don’t think Dean meant to kill him. I think that was at least partially the Mark’s doing. All three gentlemen looked surprised, though in Death’s case, he moved past it quick, and his final expression had more the “Well, SHIT. Didn’t anticipate that one. Good form, boys.” energy. Still miss him.

Sam was freaking precious this episode. Everything he did this episode with Dean screams little brother. And the last few seasons of Supernatural especially have really taken Sam and made him a force to be reckoned with. We've seen his strength, his growth, his resilience. We've seen him tortured and hold his own, we've seen him lead an army of hunters, we've seen him take charge and become a next level hunter, a leader. Which is incredible, and I love that for Sam. But here... this is just a little brother. A scared, worried little brother trying desperately to help his big brother, who he sees is hurting, badly. Trying to give Dean what he wants, do what he knows Dean enjoys... Sam has always been selfless on a big picture scale (sacrificing himself to Hell, willing to die to close the Gates of Hell, willing to die to keep Dean safe), but it is such a beautiful look into these boys and their relationship to see the genuine selflessness of such small, innocent acts as well. It was played for a comedic effect, to sort of help ease the darkness of the rest of the episode, but there is a pureness in Sam that is sometimes buried because of everything the boys are doing, that really got a chance to shine here and I absolutely adore it.
Dean on the other hand... Dean really hit rock bottom here. And, honestly, part of me is angry at Dean every time I watch this episode. After everything they have been through, Dean makes Sam watch his big brother die in front of him, again, with no guarantee that he'll make it back. And he does it on purpose. Especially given how Sam has been so desperate to ease just a little of his brother's burdens, it feels almost cruel. That being said, I get why Dean did it. He is tired, and he is drowning, and he is at the end of the rope. We've seen Dean like this before, with Bobby's death, and Cas' betrayal/death, and even briefly when Sam was infected with Croatoan virus. He wanted to do what he could to save those kids, and he didn't have the strength left to keep fighting for his own life. The entire episode did a phenomenal job of making the audience feel the weight that is on Dean. It is dark, and depressing, and heavy, and it feels like a failure. You can almost feel yourself in Dean's shoes. As much as Sam is trying to be the light at the end of the tunnel, you can also the weight on him, and that light flickering. Until the speech with Billie, and her talk with Dean. Her telling Dean that he and Sam are important (and also the little throwback of "you've got work to do". Which is just *chef's kiss*) Her explaining about Death's potential deaths, how today isn't one of them... it is like lighting a spark. A tiny one, sure, but you see the tiniest shift in Dean. Because when he gets back, he isn't apathetic anymore. He isn't... uncaring, or lethargic, the way he was in the beginning of the episode. He is in pain, definitely, and he is very much wounded, but he is feeling again, he has that literal spark of life back. That then ignites when he gets the call from cas. Jensen just performed unbelievably in this episode. Though I would still smack Dean for putting Sam through that lol.
As for Billie/Death, you can call her either. She goes by both. A lot of people in the fandom call her Billie, to keep the distinction between her incarnation of Death, and the original Death, but either name works
