Wednesday 2x05 Full Reaction!

Wednesday 2x05 Full Reaction!

Having not seen the trailers, I was under the impression that they just spoiled Weems being in this. Was not aware they gave away the how she was back, so that one’s news to me. See we both caught the incorrect line of the Bard that was used. And we then have to correct Gomez by telling him that Aristotle was not Belgian. The central message of Buddhism is not “Every man for himself.”. And the London Underground is not a political movement. (I know: Different Jamie Lee Curtis film than the one you referenced, nicely done with that one, by the way. Seemed a good line to use though.) At least Weems returning was fast, complete with more of that fabulous wardrobe. You still want to give Gwendoline a hug hearing her talk about this show finally making her feel attractive. Trying to recall if you mentioned The Girlfriend before. Not seen it, though I’ll take Olivia being fabulous as fuck, just as I’m sold on whenever it comes out, she’s in an upcoming film with Helen Mirren with Helen playing Patricia Highsmith. Tis a damn shame that Goody’s actress was too busy. Again, the Ophelia thing seemed obvious, and Jess made the good note of Uncle Fester not recognizing her. The reveal does make you wish that Galpin was not dead, which lends further evidence of maybe his actor wasn’t available for a whole season, and like you note, there wasn’t a plausible enough explanation as to how he’d be offscreen and not come back for the big reveal. Can see the beef with Frances, and nice that you are trying set that aside here so as to appreciate the talent. I wouldn’t blame you if you couldn’t do that as the Bronte thing does sound rotten. Amy Adams in this would be grand; see you went with asking for her in this show, and I said that I want to see Ian McDiarmid in this. Two of them sharing scenes would be sublime. Much though you would miss the fun of the madness, yeah, there is the delight in playing the upright regular people who the family has no idea they’re horrifying so badly. Seems that it’s curtains for Pilgrim Karen. Still pissed off that the movie shoehorned in the later quick shot of Amanda Buckman, showing that Wednesday didn’t kill her, making me yell, “Aw, why’d th- Ahh!” as I was SO on board with Wednesday burning her when I was a kid. Still mad about in my thirties. Did not know about the vampire of it all, though in googling, I see that it’s more Buffy that I’m still behind on. You can tell that Luis has had that one moment in the barrel for quite some time, and it was fantastic to see. Not seen the next episode yet, probably seeing it tonight before bed. I know about that which no one will shut the fuck up about, sending me in the Joe Pesci anger over the lack of consideration, spoiler-wise. See how it goes, and discussion about it is reserved for when Jess has the reaction up. Should be fun. ...And terrifying.

It very much feels like the writers got to this point and then thought "Oh shit, we're in no way equipped to handle so many new characters on top of everything else that has to get done this season. I guess they've all got to go." It feels especially rushed that the mercenary is killed before Wednesday even knows he exists; at least Peacemaker had a known behind the scenes excuse for that. I was 13 when Con Air came out, and it was my first conscious experience of disagreeing with how the movie wanted me to feel about a certain character. I rewatched it just recently and it still very much feels like the final scene is banking on "Look, it's beloved actor Steve Buscemi, everything he does is so cool and likable, right?" rather than anything that makes sense with how we know this particular character.

It was a huge mistake how the trailers for the second half spoiled Gwendoline's return, and even the exact nature of it, so it was a big relief that didn't get to you (and now I'm more sure than ever of who the actual actress you were spoiled for is). I was a bit proud of myself for having a moment of "In the words of Hamlet, what's done is done" "That's Macbeth, you know nothing twit" at Gomez's line. I also have to point out that for as far back as the relation can apparently still work, pretty much anyone can be a spirit guide for anyone else. And maybe that's how we can even get Galpin back if they want to walk that back too. Gwendoline wastes no time getting back in the act, with an opening shot that I kind of thought would send Wednesday bolting awake and shouting "What the fuck?" like Josh Brolin, and she has such palpable joy at getting to do more of the first role that made her feel attractive. That look of continual outrage at everyone scoring points off her is up there with Olivia Cooke in House of the Dragon (speaking of, she kicks so much ass in The Girlfriend and any fan of hers should watch it). Shame at the apparent confirmation that Goody's gone permanently; maybe they lost access to the actress or something. Pretty much everyone spent the month assuming this new character was Ophelia, so well done on the twist there. And this makes me even more sure there was some issue with the availability of Galpin's actor, since it's an insane waste to not have him around for her return, and they must have figured just sending him offscreen somewhere would make it impossible to believe he wouldn't come back for this. Being a proud aroace, I do have some beef with Frances O'Connor for making a movie that reduced ace icon Emily Bronte to just another lovelorn straight girl, but I try to put it aside to just appreciate her acting talent. This also means that Ophelia is still open to whatever, and if previous Burton actors are still on the table, I'd go with Amy Adams doing more of her wicked stepmother act from Disenchanted. It always seems like the most fun roles to play in these things are the upright regular people who the family has no idea they're horrifying so badly, and Lisa O'Hare understandably impressed the crew so much with her Season 1 guest spot that she got to come back, even if it seems like the last time. Kind of like Mercedes McNabb (now that's someone who'd make a neat legacy appearance, especially if it leans into her time as a vampire). But she got a killer scene with Gomez on the way out, with something Luis has clearly been wanting to say to someone for a while. As you might imagine, anything else I could say about this whole development would be very tricky to avoid spoilers, so I'll leave off here for now.

Much to ponder following this episode, like you said. We start with the sweet parental concern for Wednesday. Reading the Scottish play doth have good effect for rejuvenating health. Love how I beat Morticia when Gomez said about Denmark still being rotten tomorrow, I said, “That’s Hamlet, but thanks for playing.” Seems most of the LOIS patients are dead, save the plot relevant ones. Enjoyed your words on that. Nice quick update on Bianca and her mom, complete with our first real look at Gideon, making me say, “What in the damn hell!?” in pleasant surprise that Casper Van Dien is part of the show. Man, we’re getting some good previous Burton actors in this. How do we get Ian McDiarmid for this, pretty please with sugar on top? Nice to see you were unspoiled by Weems. Still not sure I can say the one adjective you used to describe Weems, on top of the fact that I still don’t understand the meaning of the phrase. Good to see her again, though there is the distraction of how blatantly obvious it is that this is the result of everyone wanting Gwendoline back, despite how little sense it makes, not that it’s strictly speaking a bad thing. I was spoiled as evidently, this was in the trailer, and people screamed about it, making me yell about the spoilers. Now I will say that I expected more a “Somehow, Weems returned.” and it was interesting to reveal that she is still dead and is now Wednesday’s spirit guide. The familial connection is blatantly a cheap retcon, but I’ll be nice and run with it. Weems is living for being Wednesday’s tormentor. Do defend Wednesday when she’s accused of setting Tyler free, “No, sorry, Larissa, that was the older Wednesday that set Tyler free.” and it is nice how Wednesday calls Weems out on some shit, even inadvertently roping Dort in on it. Love how you and Weems share displeasure of Dort. (Which as you say, not to impugn Steve as he is awesome.) She finds her becoming persona non-grata, and her job taken by a carnival barker masquerading as an educator such as Dort to be insane. Setting aside her sins containing more than just a “bad normie hire”, my wise ass replies. “Now you’re talking semantics. What if I told you insane was working fifty hours a week in some office for fifty years at the end of which they tell you to piss off? Ending up in some retirement village. Hoping to die before suffering the indignity of trying to make it to the toilet on time. Wouldn’t you consider that to be insane, Larissa?” And we learn about Capri’s history with hydes. Curious taste in men, she has. And she wants Wednesday not to entertain the one idea. But she didn’t entertain the idea. She full-on committed to the idea. And you side with Weems. (Because, you know, her judgment was always sterling.) Get the big laugh over Morticia’s sass about Weems. We both loved Enid calling out Wednesday with the coddling. Again, there is Wednesday getting unfair blame, and I yell, “Enid, that was the nineties Wednesday! WHY is everyone getting that confused!?” At some point for Wednesday, yes, as it concerns Enid, if she wants to court the little lady, she’s got to be a straight shooter and tell her. The TRUUUUUUUTH!!! We are reaching our limit with Agnes. Astonishingly enough, you reacted calmer than I did to Agnes casually revealing her activities whilst Wednesday was comatose. Mind you, I did greatly appreciate the look on your face followed by you saying “No! No, no, no.” the way you did. Me, I heard Agnes admit what she did, I saw red, and yelled, “Yeah, ok, just a quick fucking boundary check here, Rhoda fucking Penmark! We are fucking making this abundantly goddamn clear: You went TOO FAR this time, little missy! Bad enough you wearing Wednesday’s clothes in the creepy fashion! But her hair, Agnes, you DON’T braid and/or otherwise mess with a woman’s hair without consent!!” We both loved the scenes of Gomez and Pugsley having some good father and son bonding. We agree on that being what we need. ADORE Gomez being the sly fox with calling out the appropriation. A stir is caused by Slurp who continuously looks more and more exfoliated. He killed some people. If the Karen from Pilgrim Land ended up being dinner, it’s not a total loss. Am I right? Hahahahaha!!! Love how Pugsley lets Slurp go, and Gomez supports that, though he then informs Morticia that apparently Slurp is Isaac, and it seems he knows Judi. He did call the old man a friend. Bringing us to a strength of this show as you say: the trickle of answers to the mysteries. Tim Burton’s shown good skill with a gradually unfolding mystery at a steady pace, here done very well. And I love how the reveals in this show feel fairly understated. One of the big questions answered was Francoise. You say that you feel that you should have deduced it sooner. I had suspected. Main thing was that it would explain why Galpin started his investigation in the first place. The attention given to her, combined with Uncle Fester not seeming to recognize her, thus ruling out her being Ophelia, the idea of her being Tyler’s mom started to take root, and it’s revealed here, again in a fairly understated fashion. Everyone is wary Francoise and Tyler being reunited, though better than Wednesday taking part in that shit with the needles. Morticia says that she believes the word of a mother, and I note, “Morticia does have you there, Wednesday.” And how long will the deal and promise hold when Francoise discovers the fate of the Kansas City Scalper and says, “Look how they massacred my boy.” whilst holding the Addams family responsible, I wonder? I liked your words on that promise made, and we are cautiously optimistic. Then there is the matter of Enid wolfing out, despite it not being the full moon. Well, it was the original rule that it was originally when the wolfbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright. Only in the later films was it the full moon. Though I suspect that’s not what’s happening here. See how that goes, and how it leads into the other thing that NOBODY will shut the fuck up about, thus spoiling shit for everybody who doesn’t binge, ya JERKS!!! All seriousness, another fun Wednesday reaction, Jess, thanks.
